Take a look under the front bumper of this truck. Any idea what this is used for? I have never seen anything like this. I dont know if its for a plow or a camper.
Going off of just the two pictures you have it looks like its the factory crash bar that's missing the factory cover for it. Around 2001 (not sure if it was govt. mandated) a "crash bar" was added underneath the bumper in the event of an accident the truck would not run up over top of the vehicle it hit. So with this bar (usually with a plastic cover) it lowered the mass surface of the accident area a few inches. Same with tractor trailers (this was gov't mandated) they had to add materials to the back of the trailer to prevent cars from going under the trailer in an accident situation. Before this most accidents involving the trucks would allow the bottom of the trailer to end up in the "living space" of the car. The added material prevented the car from going under the trailer.
yep, its the crash bar. my truck has two sets of plastic valances, one that is shown in that pic, plus another one that is vertical, that covers up the crash bar. notice the same exact thing in the 2002 f-350 in red behind my truck.
It is a truck I am thinking of purchasing. It is about 90% what I want. It is an 02. I didnt see that on my 02, but maybe it was under the plastic and I didnt have a 4x4.
hllon4wheels where do you live? lenz truck center is about 45 minutes from where i live. if you live out of state i can take a look at it for you. let me know

i went out and took some pics of my new nify inline tranny filter, and while i was around the bumper, i figure i would take some pics to ease any uncertainty.
strokin_it7.3 - so you say that it is a crash bar?
Any Ideas why that plastic cover would be gone? Looks like a super clean truck!
muktown - I am in SE louisiana, so if you have the opportunity to visit them, that would be sweet! I have emailed the dealership today to ask about 5th wheel/goosenck evidence. Any input on the integrity of the dealership? They have a bunch of testimonials on their site and a few complaints on BBB.
Anyone else have any input on the possibilities of buying a truck from 900 miles away? My plan is to fly up, drive back. Been saving my pennies and plan to pay cash. Everything has to be perfect for me to fly up there and drive 15 hours back.

What did you do to protect yourself? Having some BBB complaints dont make me feel so good. Its the best truck I have found. The only thing that it doesnt have that I would like is reverse aid sensors. I wouldnt mind having leather, but it is not an issue if I cant get it.
I looked locally for several weeks and everything here is either junk or a 6.0. Katrina has increased the demand for 7.3 trucks dramatically.
