Our '86 F250 with a 460 has developed a small crack (very small at this point, it took forever to figure out the location) in the passenger side exhaust manifold. How large of an effort (ballpark number of hours) is it to replace it? Is it something that I should address asap, or is it something that can wait a month or two kind of thing? (aka, let the days get a bit warmer...)
You have my sympathy. If your truck is air conditioned it gets to be a real pain. If you have the dual air pumps you have them to contend with. Your biggest problem is going to be rusted bolts and breaking them. I did the driver's side on mine last year and it was bad enough, I have a leaking gasket on the passenger side and need to do it. Lots of penetrating oil and maybe some serious heat.
I have the same truck as you and I rebuilt the engine this summer. I heard the same stories about the manifolds and I was relieved when my manifolds came off with no problems, and no PB Blaster. Don't try that though, it won't always work. Take some PB Blaster or any other rust penetrating oil and spray the bolts a few hours before you do the work. If you have a 4x4, the rear bolts will be easier to get to from under the truck.
At work we use pb blaster and lots of it when it comes to removeing manifolds. Usually when the bolts break its normally the head twisting off the bolt so you can get a good pair of vise grips on them and twist them out.i have found that it helps to run the motor and get it warm then spray them down heavly right after you shut it off then let it cool for a few hours and spray them again befor trying to remove them. if they come out a little then get tight spray them again and tighten it a little bit then try removeing it again. on the higher end it could take as long as 3 hours or so but if you are quick it could be done in about a hour. Once you get them all out run a tap in the holes to clean them out good it will make it quicker and easyer going back together.
