I've been reading the forum and just joined because everyone seems to help out so well. I have a 1988 ranger 2.3 that I just bought to tow my boat and drive back and forth to work. I changed out all the fluids, fuel filter, and spark plugs. It runs great for a while and then sometimes when I come to a stop and start to accelerate again it feels like it is completely flooded out and you can't give it any gas. It barely stays started, throws a little black smoke and then takes off again like nothing ever happened. It only happens after I have completely stopped like at a stop sign and start to accelerate again. I have not checked any codes since I just got the truck a week ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't know much about ranger's so please be specific if responding. Thanks again.
autozone wont pull EEC-IV codes but if you go to the Tech Info sticky thread at the top of this forum there is a link to instructions for pulling them yourself with a voltmeter and a jumper wire.
I've just bought it and I don't think I quite understand how to pull the codes. If I'm just using the check engine light do I just hook up a jumper wire from STI to SIG RTN. How will the codes display? Also, where is the self-test plug. Is it in the cab or engine bay? Thanks for any help, I'm new at this. By the way, my gas mileage is horrible and I've changed the spark plugs and fuel filter. Any other ideas?
