I'm new here. From what I've read, I hope someone can answer my questions. Bought a 74 F-350 from my father who bought it in 78. About 10 years ago the motor (460) was re-built by some hot-rod shop my brother sold parts to. Problem is, no one remembers what was done. All I know is all the guts were replaced with supposed high performance parts, and the RV cam was custom machined. (Dad likes to go over the mountains 65mph with his big 5th wheel.)Also re-built the tranny with a shift kit. What I want to find out is where the red-line is and what stuff is inside this engine without pulling it apart if possible. Also wondered how I could get the rear-wheel horse power numbers, since I don't know anyone with a dyno. I know racin a pickup sounds dumb, but this thing hauls, and I want to make it faster. I put on headman headers with 3inch duals and flowmasters with 31/2 in crome exhaust tips. Sounds better and raised the gas milage from 8 to 9. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
For the redline put a tach on it and run it through the gears, you should feel where its dropping off power. Or listen for the valves to start floating
If you are going to race it just play with the shift points to get you best time and shift there, don't worry too much about redlines, you should know when you wind it too far.
