I just purchased this cd player for my truck from crutchfield. The player will come with the wiring harness for my truck, is there a way to wire up the player so I can control the display brightness with the OEM switch? I'm looking forward to having a quality stereo in my truck, but I also enjoy having the dash lights dimmed down low at night.
I've installed stereos in other vehicles before and have always complained about how bright the stereos are at night. 1) I didnt know if I just wasnt hooking something up right or 2) Its not an option with aftermarket head units.
some units have a variable display. It will have a dimmer attachment wire. Some just dim when the parking lights are turned on and some actually dim with the dimmer switch. You'll just have to check it out.

The Alpine's have this feature. It's an orangish/yellowish wire (on my 9853), and is labeled "Illum.". The adapter harness will have a space to connect it, and it worked great in my 94 F150.
Not all Alpine's have this feature(though most do).
You should be able to go to Alpine's site, and put in your model number to find out for sure. Or, you could call Crutchfield, they should have the info as well.
Thanks guys, after looking into it a little more the 9851 does have the orange Illum wire.Pyrobob, you said your 9853 wired right in with the wiring harness? I was hoping this was too good to be true, I hate trying to chase down wires up under the dash.
I just installed that same model in my 250, it does have a illumination wire and the factory radio did also. I haven't really checked to see if it is adjustable. I do believe that it has a bright display unless the lights are on then I thinks is just dims the display for night driving. I will have to check tonight on my way home.

Awesome, just what I was hoping for. With this head unit, 4 Alpine 6x8" speakers and a Infinity Basslink T sub on order I'm hoping to have some killer sound come next weekend.

Mine dimmed relative to the dash brightness...however since I only had one working bulb in my dash, it was always on bright.
I bought it from Crutchfield, and it came with an adapter plug, to go from the Alpine plug-in to the Ford factory plug-in harness. Took about 15 minutes to install.
After about a month, I installed new wiring anyway, when I went from factory speakers to CDT Audio components and an amp (I left all the old wire in there, so I could switch back easily when I sold the truck 9 months later).
