cam for 400?

hey guys.. i'm getting set to install a new cam in a friends 78 f250 4x4.. it's got 4.10 gears and a new process 435 tranny in it.. my question is what is a good cam to install... i haven't tore into the motor but the guy who owned it before said he did a ring and bearing on it and some fresh heads.. i checked the compression and they're all good and within 10 lbs of each other.. it has headers and a edelbrock performer manifold with a 780 vacuum secondary dual feed holley... another friend ran a "RV 2" cam which all he could remember was is was a step over stock... not much help.. any suggestions???? thanks alot.

Comp Cams 255 or 265 cam. What was the psi readings on your cylinders, that will give an idea of what your compression ratio is.

I think what he means to say to be more specific is 255DEH or 265DEH. The 265 is for a slightly higher RPM range and will give a lumpier idle. I'll be putting a 265 in my truck by the end of the month.

By the way the DEH part means Dual Energy Hydraulic, everyone seems to agree that these cams are the best means to wake up these engines. I'll post my results after I get mine in :-)

i haven't done my own compression test and my friend isn't a real mechanical person and had their brother help who's a moron so i've gotta double check things myself.. they said they got 145 as an average though... i run all FE's in my trucks and love the powermax series because they favor the exhaust like these two grinds do... any crane cams worth a crap or just these comps? i'm kinda partial to the crane but i'm gonna go with what you guys recommend cause i don't know any better for the 400...

Given that psi, you are in the 8.0:1 compression ratio range. I wouldn't go too wild on a cam then.

Post #8 is how I based that on:

I run the 941 Crane and like it alot, however their recommendation is at least 8.7:1cr. Without looking it up the 901 is the next one down in their line I believe, and probably would be ok with stock cr.
