i vote for the FE.. the modified is a strong pulling motor if you juice it up a bit and with that 4 inch stroke, it makes good torque... i like the fe cuz i know it better and i think it's built a little heavy dutier also....
if both were completely stock id say the 390 is better, if you had a few performance mods on each then i think the 400 might be a little better.
although if your looking for a good all around truck engine, i think the 300 or a 460 is better then both of them.
the stock 400 was simply a pig, lousy mileage and not much power. The 390 that was in my buddies old truck had its fair share of problems, but mainly it was impossible to find parts for. it was pulled and replaced with a 460.
The first 400 (no M) that came out in 1971 was a real torque monster and would put the similar 390's to shame. Everybody wanted one but by the time word got around and people got them it was 1972 and the engine had been killed by reducing the compression ratio and retarding the cam timing. That led to a lot of disappointment and everybody seems to remember the stories about the "Dog" 400's. The 390's after 1971 were dogs also but nobody seems to remember that.
'78, I voted for the 390, but that is because thats were most of my experience is, and I have several of them. But if one of my trucks had a 400 in it, I would leave it there. The 400 is very capable if built correctly, and it ain't that hard. It is good enough that I wouldn't swap it out if the truck already had one. DF, @ his Dad's house
They're both great engines. I really like the 400, the one I had in my '79 was strong as hell. I don't care who or why people call them dogs. However, I voted 390 because FE's are darn near indestructible.
And hard to find parts for? I don't get that. FE's are so common all the parts stores carry inventory for them and about the cheapest prices too. How many vehicles can you buy starters for $35 these days?
