power-lock diff question

hey. i have a power lock differential out of a 66 3/4 ton ford that i had installed into my dana 60 which will be going in to a '82 ford truck. anyways i got it back and it seems that when i installed the new clutches i forgot to double check that the splines in the two gears on each side were lined up. so i pulled it back out and got em lined up but as i go to tighten the carrier the gears shift and then become misaligned agian. so after this i left the axles slid in while i tightened it but it must still shift because i then can't get the axles back out. has anyone else had this problem or is there some special trick to doing this. i really need the help cause i need to get this thing back together.

never mind. i ended up being able to make a jig out of 2x4 to support the axles while i bolted the case halfs together and it worked pretty well. so the carrier is back in and all i have to do is rebuild the brakes.
