I have a 1998 Ford Ranger with the 2.5L 4Cyl. The other day I noticed that the temp. could not be adjusted it was either max heat or nothing even with the selector set to A/C and the climate control is all the way on cold. I was wandering if any one on here would have an idea of what would cause this. Thanks in advance for the help
Sounds like another case of the blend door problem. Basically, there is a blend door in the heater plenum that controls how much air flows past the heater core. It tends to break in this era of Rangers/B-series/Explorer, usually the sympton being that you can only get heat, no matter what the temperature dial setting is. It breaks where it meets the actuator, an electric motor that moves the door when you turn the temperature dial.

This thread has a link to instructions that will describe how to tell if it is indeed your blend door that is broken. You could have a broken actuator if you are lucky. This is easy to tell by removing the glove box, popping the actuator off the top of the plenum, leaving the actuator plugged in, and turning the dial. If the actuator is dead, it won't turn and you can just get a new one at the dealer. If not, you can then also use a dentist's mirror to assess the condition of the blend door. If you determine that your blend door is broken in the way the article describes, the cheap fix that the article describes may work for you. If not, you have options like replacing the heater plenum or replacing the door in the plenum, both of which are described here:
I am wondering if this may be my problem. The only difference in my case is that when I put the control to max a/c i do get cold air, but everything else, even regular a/c gives me hot air. I have a '96 Ranger 3.0L 4x4 5spd.
