timing advance

I have a 74 360 and have a question about the timing advance. how many deg. should your timing advance when you open up the throttle. also should it advance any with the vacuum advance line unhooked and plugged.

Check out the FE forum.

Looking at this it seems that total advance should be around 39 degrees. Yes the advance should increase even with the vacuum line unhooked and plugged. A distributor has 2 means to advance, the vacuum advance of which you are aware, and a centrifical advance. This consists of weights that spin outwards as the engine speeds up and thus produce a twisting force that advances the distributor. As for information on the vacuum advance, I think you already have several responses to your thread on the FE forum.

timing advance

The proper way to checking for advance it to remove the vac line and plug it. this checks for the mech adv and the ball park is 10~12 initial then about 36~40 at about 2500~3500. But all this depends on the build of the engine, gears and usage.

I understand the vac adv should be timmed, that is it should be 0 at idle and kick in briefly when the carb is opened then go back to 0.

One of the easy ways to set the timming, is to advance until 2 deg at a time until you have pinging under load on a warm day, then back off 2 deg.

The BEST way to time, it to pay a pro $75 to recurve the dist specfic to your setup.
