Check out www.proguard7.com it shows why you do NOT want a 4 layer filter on a diesel. The PG7 stops the dirt btu flows the air. Check out the AFE Stage I ans Stage Ii intake system, best value for flow and stopping dirt out there. Call us if you have any questions etc.
I've got some input and another question on this...
My X is all stock..... A friend got me a K&N replacement for free so I figured I'd give it a try. On my recent trip to WY and Back pulling the 5-6000# trailer, I swapped the filters out a couple times just to see the difference. None of the drivers really felt any difference, but it appeared to get me one extra mpg (while pulling, so we're talking 9 vs 10).
Other than the Hellwig I ordered and the new shocks I'm deciding on, I'm not likely to spend any more money on mods right now, but a friend who did the Kwik filter really boasts about it. He had all the goodies though... WW, full exhaust, Diablo programmer, yadda yadda yadda..... My guess is I'm pulling all the air the motor knows what to do with through the K&N and until I open the exhaust up there's no point in putting the bigger filter on. Am I correct, or do you guys think the bigger filter may still do me some good? Would it atleast get me some better sound effects?
Also, how quick is the ECM on these at learning? By swapping the filter every 400 miles, was the ECM keeping up or was I just confusing it, or is the filter really not going to make any difference?
I installed the K&N FIPK 3 years ago. I love it. It increased my mileage about 3 mpg. Along with the Diablo Preadatro and High Flow exhaust, I get about 22 mpg highway with my 2000 7.3 4WD
Air filter needs replacement. Should I go with a standard replacement, K&N or a cold air kit like a K&N FIPK? TIA
IMO go with the Kwik filter mod. You can get the filter at most NAPA stores - it is part 6637, or you can order it online at fleetfilter.com - part number 46637. I put the Kwik mod on my EX and love it! More flow, better filtration, better sound and cheap $$. I even feel like I have a little better throttle response and a tad more low end power. Stay away from the stock air box and filters, they are prone to not sealing well and letting crud into your turbo and engine. Take a few moments and test it out this way. Remove your stock airbox (it is only about 4 screws if I remember right, and one clamp). Take it out in the sunlight and look in the 4" hole. You will probably see daylight where the top half of the box seals onto the filter. If you can see light... then dust will get through there too. You can go to the diesel forum and do a search on "dusted turbo" to see just what this does to your turbo compressor wheel vanes.
