I have read several peoples signatures and they list a 6A ignition box. Exactly what brand and model are you using? Do you notice anything with a different ignition box? Are you able to gap your plugs to a larger gap? What is all needed to put one of these in?
I bought an MSD ignition setup for my truck. I bought a coil, box, MSD wires, and autolite platinum plugs. There was also a harness.
There was a thread on this in the 300 forum where the guy installed exactly what I did and claimed to be getting 22 mpg, which turned out to be a complete lie. My mileage didn't change a bit. I gapped the plugs a little more, to maybe .050. It starts up easier, but otherwise runs exactly the same.
You wont notice any difference over the factory ignition in your 94 truck, the factory one is pretty good. If you go to a very high performance engine turning higher rpm's, forced induction or nitrous would be the only time you will need an aftermarket ignition for these trucks. There wont be any improvements in mileage or power either, sorry.
MSD Ignitons produce a better spark and DO provide you with more power. If you have trouble fouling plugs, you won't anymore. MSD Ignitions are some of the best on the market if not the best. Of course its going to be better than stock. I am rebuilding a cammed 351w and its getting an MSD 6A box with msd coil. The 6A box helps with hard starting, idle, inproved throttle response and an accurate quality burn. The system is More Efficient. Simply put read the facts about the voltage increase. More spark.. More power.
To re-iderate: It won't add a significant amount of power, but in almost all of the applications the MSD coil and 6a box is a big improvment over stock.
I have had an MSD ignition set up in EVERY vehicle I have owned or own now , I wouldnt use anything else except maybe a Jacobs Hi Energy Pack , Ive put MSD on everything from a 302 Mustang , to my 4.0 Str 6 Jeep to my 351 and no one is gonna convince me it was a waste of money ! Will it turn your tired old beater engine into a firebreathing 500hp monster ?? NO WAY , is it worth having an excellent , matched , high quality ignition system ? ABSOLUTELY , when my current 351 Dist is do to get replaced , I'll be dropping in an MSD Billet Distributor as well .
I agree. MSD ignitions are very good. I have had a couple of them. Had an 84 Ranger with a 351W that I put a four barrel and Performer intake and cam on it. Then I put a complete MSD ignition. Billet distributor, 6A box Blaster II coil, and Helicore Wires. The ignition made more of a performance difference than the Four barrel and intake and cam. My 78 F 150 has a 6A box and it made the 400 run a lot smoother and start much easier. I am going to get a 6AL box for my 78 and put the 6A on my 95 F 350 with the 5.8. I am very impressed with MSD ignition parts.
