Do the chips, tuners, exhausts, and air filters, etc. really do that much to improve the performanc of these new trucks or is it just hype and not worth the money. I have an 06 F150 KR 5.4 and 3:73, the truck off the line is strong but I would like a little more in the middle, if I can get it, it would be nice, if I can't I can live with it. Looking for opinions, Thanks.
If you get a tuner, when it's in performance mode you have to burn Premium gas! I don't think it is worth the expense of the tuner, and premium fuel. Every actual test I have seen the performace inrease is not that much. I take the dyno reports with a grain of salt if they don't show the configuration when tested. The chipsets seem to be tested in conjunction with other bolt on mods. The only sure and correct way to do it is to have a real time spark and fuel curve adjusted while on the dyno. This provides the optimum performnce for your vehicle as opposed to a generic setup, which could vary by vehicle.
Filters and cold air intakes are not worth the trouble...IMO. For one, there is only one brand, VOLANT, I think that is a "true" Cold air intake. Do a search and I bet you find alot of people with my same opinion...that got caught in the "hype" and have put the stock intake back on. I had MAC cold air, put stock back on and mileage improved...funny, huh! Programmer basically to calibrate spedo for my 35s, other than that...dont notice much in power really, I run the 87oct setting. Not worth the money to run "performance" mode at 93oct...like KevinM said above! The only time you will feel those extra few ponies, is when you stomp on it Full Throttle and the rpms are high...thats the only time I think youll notice anything. Do like my "true dual" exhaust with 3" tips...basically just looks good and sounds good...opened up the motor at higher rpms, other than that...no increase in mileage or nothing. Basically alot of these ad ons are hype! Gears are prob the best overall bet for more power in these trucks...say 4.10 or 4.56!
My tuner (SCMT 1715) really wakes the truck up. It eliminated the throttle lag (which your 06 KR may not even have) and added much fat to the middle and upper end.
I've been using the 87 program for about 3 weeks now and am going BACK to the tow-performance program becuase I miss the punch when I need to pass.
I use the TP program only because...well...I tow and the HP isn't recommended for towing.
The gas consideration is a big one to some. To me the difference in 87 to 92 is only .11 at my local COSTCO. That translates into roughly $3.00 more to fill. Well worth it! Even if the difference was .20, like at the local Chevron, the $5.40 more to fill would be worth it. Your call.
Maybe the dyno doesn't show a huge gain in peak HP (30HP?)but the driveability is way up.
the chips is worth every penny. i have an edge and love this thing. if you are going to do a chip, I would do an aftermarket exhaust. More fuel and air in the motor so let it out easier, and the stock exhaust is approx the size of a keg.
I bought the Edge Evo. unit for my 04 F150 FX4 SC, 3.73LS, 5.4L. SO far I have only ran the "tow" program and it made a huge differance in the mid range! A buddy of mine who had a programmer on a 97 Chevy 1500 Z71, said that his didn't make any differance, no matter what performance setting he had it on or octane rating he had. So I took him for a ride in my truck first in the stock mode, then put it in the tow mode. He said that he was very impressed with how it performed. I am glad that I spent the money on the unit. I am going to be putting on about 150 miles tomorrow so I will see what happens with the mileage also.
