87 Bronco... As far as I know the top has never been removed. Are there any steps or precautions I need to take before removal and when I put it back on. I don't want any leaks.
Inspect your rubber seals when you put it back on. I like to ut O-Ring grease on mine to moisten them up so they don't dry rot and crack. And obviously make sure they are seated correctly. Other than that, nope.
For taking it off, you will probably need two people at least since it is fairly heavy. When taking it off and putting it back on, you have to watch the seals on the edges so you don't catch them on anything and rip them. Also, when storing while it is off, keep it on a flat surface so you don't wreck the seals.
Thanks, sounds easy enough. Have any of you rigged up some kind of hoist system so it can be done single handedly?? I have some ideas but wondering if there is anything else out there (where to hook to, etc..)...
I have heard of taking two 2X4s and putting them on each end of the top running across the width of the top. This way all you have to do is lift one end at a time and then slide the 2X4 through. Then you can take straps and attach them to the ends of the 2X4s and lift up.
I have been considering doing something like that but don't want 4 hooks on the corners of the top. Thats been the best idea I've had. Oh, plus leaving it off permanantly so I don't need a hoist system.
Sorry I thought you already had it off, so when taking it off other than what topfisherman said, alot of people say not to slide it, unbolt it and lift it straight up. I actually always slide it and have had no problems but according to some, thats the wrong way.
Another thing that I've done is not put all the bolts back in. Just put corners and maybe midway bolts. I haven't had any trouble doing that either.
I tried doing a system and it failed. I bought to pullys only about 4" dia. and tied two ropes to each corner of the top. Then I tied a rope on each side of the two ropes to the corners and put the now single ropes on each side through the two pullys. I found out that I need bigger pullys. I was way to heavy for me to lift it.
Primitive I know but works.....I have another full size Ford with no cap......So I just back up to it,,,.....And slide the cap off the Bronco and on to the F150.....Same width and takes no strength...I leave both tailgates up......Only like a 12" GAP......Just figured this one out today....
The process is deliniated in the FAQ's. Also includes a few tips for those who may have 92 and later models which have different hardware securing the top but otherwise the removal process is the same.
