Are 7.3L's getting harder to find?

I have just recently noticed this trend while looking for a new (used) truck. It seems there are very few 2002-2003 7.3's even avaiable for sale. All I can find are early 6.0's right up to new ones. Theres the odd 1999-2000 F-250/350 that had been miled out beyond belief, but hardly any of the last 7.3s. I am sure some of this can be attributed to the early 6.0L problems. But I didn't think there would be this few 7.3's avaiable. Comments? Whats the scenario in your area? I am in Saskatchewan Canada BTW.

That's the way it is with all good things. The more time goes by, the more difficult it is to find one that is not worn out or wrecked or....

I see them ALL the time out on the roads - so I don't think that they aren't out there - I think it's more that people are hanging onto them longer!! (Especially with all the 6.0 problems) I think people that normally would trade-in, and upgrade, did not do so, and are waiting for a better Ford!! I'd BET, IMHO, that if the 6.4 turns out well - there will be quite a few 7.3's on the market!!

Shoot I couldn't find a decent used one (that wasn't grossly overpriced) back in 2002 when I was looking for a truck - that's one reason I ended up buying my rig brand new!

I'll tell you what, My truck hasn't dropped any in the 3 yrs Ive owned it. Was looking through cars.com just cause, and couldn't believe the price asked for these trucks, even the v10s where still high. I don't know if the cars.com will work as you are in canada, but might be able to find somethign relatively close?

When I was looking for mine, I found a good number of them out in Texas at large truck dealers. Prices seemed average for the milage and condition.

I traded in my 2000 XLT w/7.3 on Dec. 27th. I had to go back over to the dealership on Dec. 30th to pick up something and asked about my old truck. It was sold 2 days after I traded it. I did not want to ask what they got for it. I got a great deal on trade-in and did not have to hassle with selling it myself.

I looked for a year for my 02 F350. I wanted one with a verifiable mx history that wan't used for haulin.

It had 72k and that was the BEST one that I could find with patience.

I guess I should say that I also was looking for one that had less than a 100k on it.

Smile Not really looking

Well right about Thanksgiving, I was driving up the road and saw this 2002 F350, PSD, CC, DRW, 2WD Lariat and since it was my favorite color red, I had to stop. It was priced at $28,000 and with only 33,000 on the odometer I figured I would give her a whirl....After a lengthy test drive I offered him $25,000 and hated to fork over that much for a used truck to begin with, since I had a 99 F-250 with the V-10 which was working well, but had 95,000 on her. Since then, I have learned tons here on these forums and would not take anything for her now! There are some good deals out there and sometimes they sneak up on you when you aren't even looking...

I think I got lucky. I made up my mind to buy one and knew that I needed an F350 XLT,auto,cc, 4wd,drw, 7.3 with a 410 rear or higher. That day I looked for 10 hours, a lot of dealer in North Florida, and found one just traded in.....30 mins. 2003 with 46000 miles and no goose neck cut in! CarFax OK, Dealer work history...OK. $30,000 out the door. I know that I could have found a better deal if I looked on the FSBO side, but I know that the warrenty is still good on this one!!!!!!

They can be hard to find. I am still looking for the one I want to buy. I am not ready to compromise just yet. I want a 4x4 crew lb xlt or larait. I want the auto, reverse sensors, auto headlights srw, not 5th or gooseneck and under 75k miles. With no indication of mods. All for a good price.

I got mine for 12k w/ 150k on the clock. One owner cruiser. I looked and looked for a couple years and when mine came around, its like I saw the gates open. I know my search was over. The day I drove it home, my neighbor offered me 18k for it and I really considered it, but then thought- i about drove everyone around me crazy always talking and looking for the truck of my dreams.

Hey smokinLUV, I was freakin' lucky to find what I did. I only purchased my truck (2000 Ford F250 Super-Duty 4X4 with 7.3L diesel) last June (2005). I was specifically looking for the 7.3L diesel (something about the big-block), and wasn't interested in the 6.0. My parameters were 40 to 75000 miles and 1999 to 2003. I found mine with 40100 MILES! That's barely broken in for a diesel. I can't speak for the great white north (Canada) too much, but the Charlotte/Indian Trail/Monroe area of NC did me right. Got mine from Dale Jarrett Ford in Indian Trail (HUGE selection of new and used trucks), and they always had at any given time 10 to 12 good used super-duty or heavy-duty trucks (not all Ford, but mostly). Keep the faith, and keep watch on your local (or mostly local) trading magazines....someone out there has an earlier model ('99 through 2003 7.3L) with fairly low mileage (I wouldn't turn my nose up at something over 100000, so long as the maintenance was kept up).
