pickup coil
I was wondering if there is any way to test a pickup coil to see if its good or not. This is in a 390, the truck will not start, i'm not sure if the pickup coil is shot, the timing off, or the timing chain not put on in the right spot cause i was told the chain was replaced. The engine is in the truck with the body all on, how can i check to make sure the chain is in the right spot with the cam and the pistons? I have a points dist. i could put in to see if that works, but it is all set up with the dura spark. If anyone can help that would be great.

I WATCHED A FRIEND DO THIS ONCE AND I'LL TRY TO EXPLAIN IT, I'M NOT EXACLY CLEAR ON IT. HE TOOK THE DIST. CAP OFF, HOOKED A SPARK PLUG TESTER TO THE WIRE RUNNING FROM THE COIL TO THE CENTER OF DIST, I THINK. TURNED ON THE KEY AND HERE'S THE TRICK, HE TOOK AN ELECTRIC RAZOR TURNED IT ON AND HELD IT TO THE PICKUP COIL IN DIST. IT INDUCED A VOLTAGE OR SOMEHOW IT PRODUCED A CONTINUAL SPARK ON THE PLUG TESTER. ALL THE SPECIFICS MIGHT NOT BE RIGHT BUT THIS MAY GIVE YOU SOME HELP.
