i have a 77 f100 302 auto with factory air. it seems that when im running the ac a roaring like noise comes from the compresser, the ac clutch or the belts. this noise sort of resonates through the whole truck when i accelerate. it only does it like at a certain rpm. and doesnt do it at all when the ac is off. does anyone know how to stop this noise and is it normal. the ac is otherwise working properly.
Sounds to me like you just diagnosed you own problem down to the A/C comperssor. This is a job best left to the pros. They have all necessary equipment to do the job. my 2 cents worth
My 79 F-100's ac compressor does the same thing. Mine sounds like an internal bearing gone bad. It still pumps nice cold air (for now at least), so I left it alone. If you have an Auto Zone near you, they offer the clutch by itself for about $60 or with a rebuilt compressor for about $150. I figure when mine goes that's where I'll go for another one. Around here (SE KS) that's a way cheaper route than having the old one worked on.
yeah i got the truck from my wife's grandfather. he bought it new in 77 i still have the window sticker and other paperwork. he tells me that the ac has never been touched. i had to add freon last summer and it is still cold as ice even here in louisiana. its been through 1 engine and 2 transmissions but the ac is still working.
You got an a/c belt vibrating. At least that's what's wrong with mine. Have someone rev it up while you're watching the a/c belt under the hood. When you hit that special rpm, it roars through the whole truck. I've been fighting it for three years, now, and still am making fine adjustments to alighment of the compressor pulley with idler and crank.
If this is your problem, you may want to consider carrying an extra thermostat housing, bolts for it and a bucket of water around with you. I've had this a/c vibration break the 5" bolts that go thru the a/c mounting bracket and thermo housing three times. Needless to say, the engine gets rea hot real quick when all the water gets pumped out.
about your a/c i had the same problem with my 79' f150 it made terrible noises when you turned it on check your mounting bolts on the a/c you might have stripped out the threads or its just loose.
ok i i fixed it. i replaced the belt with a new one that is one inch shorter. i figured the shorter the belt the less belt that can vibrate. thanks to all that responded and i hope that this helps someone out there with the same problem.
