I'm ordering a 2006 F-550. How do I decide which gear ratio to order, 4.30, 4.88, 5.38? I will have a 11' Rugby dump bed on it and will be hauling gravel, sand, dirt, etc. Will also pull equipment on a 14,000 lbs. (max load capacity) trailer (tractor, backhoe, etc).
Higher the gear ratios better it is for you to haul, pull and do some crazy things.
14K trailer to pull with all the stuff in the truck’s bed!...I think you should stick with the highest ratio that they offer. Wait and see what the F550 owners have to say, but either way 4.30’s are simply out of question for your application.
6.0 PSD. I have a 2005 6.0 PSD w/4.88's and 6 speed manual. It just seems I need one more gear when I'm on the highway. In 2005 they did not offer anything higher than 4.88's with limited slip and I wanted limited slip. Leaning towar 4.30's just want to make sure that is low enough to do the pulling and hauling I do.
I agree with Customz. Unless you never find yourself using the granny gear when you're loaded, get the 4.88s. Your mileage will suffer at highway speeds but your better off having the power of the 4.88s.
