My 78 F-150 is stuck in 4wd! I can't get the lever to move out of 4L or 4H. What could be causing this?? When I try to drive it in 4H the rear tires lock then unlock, lock, and unlock etc etc. What in the world. ANY help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh...I have a NP205 Trasnfercase and a NP435 Transmission with the granny first gear.
It might just be the drivetrain binding up. Try rocking it back and forth with pressure (not forcing) on the 4wd stick. It should pop right out at the point where there's no binding between the front and rear.
Worse case senario, Broken teeth on the ring gear. Take the drive shaft off, jack it up and give'em a spin. No snap crackle or pop, you can rest easy. Okay now that you have the rear jacked up and on jack stands, go ahead and jack the front up. Now that none of the tires are applying presure to any drive train components, try to unlock the hubs, if they unlock, you should be able to shift out of 4wd. Or vice versa. The key is to not have any kind of a bind. The best place to shift in and out of 4wd, is where you can roll to a stop in neutral, and not have the truck want to roll. (flat ground) Or it could all be as simple as bent linkage and the transfer case is half in or out of a gear and causing the rearend to buck. Hope that helps
