After installing the Kwik filter mod, When getting on it pretty good, I hear a sound whenever the truck shifts to the next gear. Sounds like spinning a bearing that's run dry, or maybe an high pressure air valve opening and squeaking. It's pretty loud and noticable. Only happens when my foot's in it.
ahh, the great sounds of the kwik filter! yes, that is completely normal, the WOOSHing sound when you let off or shift is normal. that is just boost pressure escaping backwards past the turbo and back out of the filter. also a large sucking sound is appearant when you are at high boost. youll hear alot more noises coming from the filter, it is completely normal. goes to show how restrictive the stock system is. no sound=restriction.
that isnt compressor stall/surge. that is completely different from boost bleeding back past the turbo when you let out of the throttle. i can explain compressor stall if you'd like me to.

actually, i think it is a form of compressor stall... when your tranny shifts you loose rpm and therefore airflow, so now the turbo can not maintain the boost pressure that had been built and that air has to go somewhere, so it "slips" back around the compressor wheel and creates that "whooosshhh" sound... now, when i had the stock compressor wheel and was having the "stalling" problem while towing i was getting the same "whoosh" sound, it was just a much shorter "whoosh" and it would repeat quicker and quicker and worse and worse until i finally had to back out of the throttle... bottom line, the same thing is happening in both circumstances, but for different reasons and at different rate of speed and frequency... the "whooooosh" when your truck upshifts is not a problem at all... the "whosh whosh whosh whosh" which robs your boost and power when towing is....
Again thanks for your thoughts on this, and while I've been making a good living for some 28 years or so now working on turbine engines, (and of course think I know something about them), I'd be thrilled for you to explain compressor stall to me.
Yes, I'm with LUKE. I have almost 20 years on turbine aircraft and 5 years in a engine manfacture running test cells. I would also like to hear about compressor stall. Also if you could strokin' fill me in on how boost bleeding back past the turbo is different.
I love the whooshing sound coming from my tymar style intake on shifts. Also love the constant swhoosh/whine under heavy boost up a hill.
The sound I don't like is the psst-pssst-pssst-pssst (sounds like the whooosh on shifts, but in quick short bursts: psst-psst-psst) I've heard a couple times under pretty heavy throttle up a hill... whether it's called surge or stall (which I STILL haven't found a conclusive answer to, and it's been beaten to DEATH at TDS and some here as well), I do know that it's not good for the turbo and that the wicked wheel usually cures it, and that the ATS housing almost always cures it.
So the psst-pssst-pssst whether it be surge or stall (or perhaps they're the same thing) is bad... but the whoosh of the air flowing back out on the SHIFTS or if you're under heavy throttle and let off the pedal is okay. That sound was always happening before when stock, but with the open air filter you can now hear it quite well. That's my understanding. Can anyone confirm that for me?

Ryan,
I agree I am getting a real good woooosh now with the DP 80hp and if I get on it real hard I will get this kinda fart noise very short kinda 1-2 second noise on the 2-3 upshift?????not sure if this is surge/stall or what seems like anytime you mention a noise over "there" its automaticly surge/stall and you have to have the ATS housing, I'm gonna put the WW in this weekend and see what happens if the noise is still there then it can stay till I S#*T a turbo then I'll deal with it. I towed about 9000 last weekend and had no noises or anything going up hills so who knows maybe the noise is just overboost

i don't know if you would call that surge or stall... i always thought of it as a stalling condition... the psst-psst-psst you can get with a stock compressor wheel pulling a load up a hill... it gets much worse if you have a tuner or a chip.... i installed the wicked wheel like Kwik said and it almost completely cured the problem... i can still get a slight stall if i really try, but it has to be a really big hill... from what i understand, installing the ATS compressor side turbo housing is a better cure for this problem... it's a lot more $$$ though... and lots of guys on here say to get a van turbo... i won't claim any expertise on any of this, and there are plenty of posts on here if you do a search, i just like how the WW has helped my truck, and it was not a lot of $$, just time to install...
Does anybody know if a wicked wheel will eliminate the swooshing sound from the turbo when it shifts or you let off the throttle? I drove my buddies early 99 truck yesterday, he has a dp chip and a tymar there was no swooshing sound at all, just whistle. Thats what I am looking for.
