TFT 8,000 degrees!!!

I get this from one of my fleet vehicles. I know its not possibleto have this as an actual temperature for the transmission fluid temperature. But thats the deal.

First a little background in this bugger. Transmission overdrive ligit on shifter started blinking after a replacement,(salvage yard tranny). we call the yard get a replacement and swap it out again. It's a 4r70w tranny. The one with the protruding bubble on the trans pan and both were nicely flattened before arrival at my shop. Both times we replaced the hard harness in the tranny with the origional one that was in the initial transmission. The ones in the replacement trannys were damaged when they were slammed on the floor and that protruding bubble was forced inward(gotta love those yardbirds).

Both times we experienced the same issue the overdrive lockoutlight started flashing in the shifter. I suspect the hard harness from the origional trans to be the issue that killed the first one and hence being a problem with the replacements. I call a local ford dealer and order a new one. I install it and the issue reappears. Now I suspect a wiring issue. I check the wiring for all trans circuits for shorts , fraying , the usual. All to no avail.

I have an iFlash and reflashed the pcm, no change. I also swapped a pcm from another van. (same year 2002) also no change.

Outside of shipping this thing off to the dealer, I was wondering if we have any top notch tranny guru's that have run across this in the past? Or are good enough to shed enough light on this to get this thing back on the road. I can probably answer most questions on this issue if you have any.

Any takers?

When the OD light flashes a code is stored in the computer's memory. Without the code you can't do any useful diagnostics.

Get the code out of the computer and we can talk.

Most likely a damaged wire outside the trans. That code means the temp sensor is shorted to ground.

I have checked and rechecked for shorts in the wiring. I even had someone drive it while I sat there with my probe and scaner conected. no shorts.

Any other suggestions?

This one has me scratching my head and wondering what it could be.

Got bored this saturday and came up to the shop just to rip apart the harness to this van to look for an intermittent short, or a corroded splice or something. Several hours later after tearing up the harness and hoping to find something I was positive it wasn't a short or a bad splice.

Considering everything I had looked at, and knowing there were only a few connectors. I decided to check to see if i had a bad connector. low and behold i found that a pin where the subharness plugs into the transmission had broken off in the connector. Great , now I need a new connector and a plug for the transmission.

I salvage the plug from a spare tranny by removing the pan and valve body. Install it in the vans tranny via the same process , then I salvage the subharness as well.

Problem solved. Van runs like a top
Thanks for the help guys
