Good power but horns won't honk

Checks completed so far: horn button works as relay would click. Check relay with test light to see no power going to horn. Replaced with new relay, power to horns but still no honk..

Using test leads, ran power directly to horns, still no honk. Thinking it's the ground, ran additional negative test lead to horn body, still no honk. Used test light grounding on body and power from the relay, tester lights up. Ran tester lead to power up both horns wiring, neither horn even makes a noise.

Process of elimination leaves only TWO bad horns to me. Am I missingsome sort of maintenance that an be completed on the horns to get them to sound or just replace them both? Find it odd both are bad. Power's good and ground is good, at least for the test light. Thoughts?

Yes both are bad if you put power directly to them. Take one off your other car and try it.

You need to have a wire going from the column end of your steering gear rag joint to the the steering box side. Electrical current won't flow through the rubber rag joint.

I'll check the rag joint ground wire today just in case. Maybe that's not completing the ground to the horn button. Doesn't explain why manually grounding and powering the horns neither one will sound. Unless I'm not grounding it in the correct spot. Keep you posted.

If the horns seem dead, here is an article to see if they can be brought back to life.

Awesome, thank you! I'll be sure to check it out and try it myself. Just to make sure it wasn't still a ground issue with the rag joint, I ran the test leads straight from the negative side of the battery and clipped it to the top part of the joint. Horn relay clicks the same and still no sound. Looks to be both bad horns, or at least they're just requiring internal maintenance.

Thanks again and I'll let you know if the tutorial helps. I'm pretty certain it's the internal contacts that are all rusted and corroded.

If the relay clicks and you have power at the horn it's a faulty horn. I recommend Cadillac horns, they have a similar tone to train horns but a bit quieter.

You might also want to take the horn off and wire brush the the contact points on the truck. i found mine where not making good contact as well as the connecters to the horns. use a set of test wires and connect the horns right to the battery and see if it goes off.

It's half-off at PnP and I had some time to kill... picked up a four-horn (Notes A,C,D, and F) set off a 95 Buick Park Avenue for $12. The horns are divided - two in the right fender, and two in the left... you'll need a 10mm socket for the ground wires and a 1/2-inch socket for the mounting bolts.

Only one Bumpside in the Richmond yard.. No Dents. Weird.
