Oh well, I guess I spoke too soon. After the dealer did the Power Foam thing, I thought I was good to go. The pinging started back 2 days later. It has gotten steadily worse and is now back to where it started. I tried different Gas but it didn't help. I tried Premium and it helped a good bit but I still have pinging once it gets warmed up. It does it on the Interstate when I barely give it gas and it does it under load like when I first start going up a hill. No Cods, No CEL.
I called the dealership back and told them that it needs to be fixed and made an appointment to bring it in on Monday after I burn off all the premium. I'm not sure what it could be. I cleaned the MAF, found carbon build up in the egr ports and removed it, cleaned the TB and the EGR. I changed the fuel filter and the dealership took out some timing and claim that the egr and DPFE are working properly. My bet is that the DPFE or EGR is only partially working.
Anyway, I'll let you know what they say after I take in on Monday.
i had a '94 explorer that pinged all the time and never had an engine code thrown, turned out to be a dirty mass air flow sensor.....i guess it wasn't sensing enough air and the computer leaned the fuel out to compensate.....
Are you sure the sound you're hearing is pinging and not piston slap? I've heard of a number of cases, starting with my uncle's 1997 4.6, that have have piston slap. He still has it, and the sound, though he has 220k miles on it now (it's had the slap since before 100k miles)
I had the same problem in my 98 4.6 for almost a year. I tried everything that you did, but nothing seemed to work. After checking the boards here, I decided to replace the MAF. Its been 6 months and no more pinging. Before changing it out, I had the MAF cleaned but it only solved the problem for a few months. Hope this helps
