i am going to run the serpentine belts and accessories including the mustang alternator . it has a internal voltage regulator, and of course the truck has one on the core support ... not real shure what to do about this
any ideas would be appreciated
Hello- Welcome to FTE! I have moved your post to the specialized forum we have here for your electrical question. Check out the list of tech forums we have here. There is a wealth of information and expertise here to help you. There are a number of links in my sig below to help you also. Have fun!
The above diagram should look like the wiring to the newer alternator. What you need to do is find one original wire(I am assuming 1977?), and then make new wires for everything else.
The one wire you need to find is lightgreen/red, and can be found on the "s" terminal of the 77 regulator if your truck has a factory ammeter in the dash. Hook it to the new alternator according to the diagram above, where it is the same color wire(and serves the same function too). Then hook all the rest of the wires up according to the diagram above, and it should work. You can get rid of the old regulator and the old alternator wiring in your harness
The original ammeter in the truck had a special piece located in the old harness on the large output wire of the old alternator, called a shunt. There should have been two little wires coming off either side of this shunt, going inside to the factory ammeter.
If you can find the piece in the old wiring, you can solder it into the new output wiring. I never worry about it because every factory ammeter I have seen didn't give much info anyway. An aftermarket voltmeter would be your best solution to monitor the new alternator, or track down the red/lightgreen wire and insert a bulb in it like the diagram above shows.
right right ....i am doing some looking right now for a set w/ volts/oil press/water temp
i have a sender for oil pressure in the block gonna see if i cant rig it up
thanx for your help ... i still havent removed all of the old wireing from the harness but i have the new alt wired up like you said and i drove it about 70 miles total no sign if battery not chargeing ...as a matter of fact the headlights are much brighter than they were before
