What is different about a 2003 Expedition's computer???

I am confused about the differences between a 2003 Expedition and a 2004 and up that make the different custom tuner application either work or not work.

Superchips lists their 1715 unit as working for 1997-2003 Expeditions, and Edge lists their tuner as working on the same years, yet none of the others except for SCT will work on the 2003 model.
I know the 1997-2003 F-150's are the same, and then the changeover in 2004 required a new unit to be designed. But the Expy changed over in 2003, and I assume a new computer came with that.
My confusion is in the fact that if the 2004 and up Expy's require the 1714 unit then what is different about the 2003/04 models? And if something works on the 1997-2003 F-150's, does it nesseccarily work on the 2003 Expy?
I guess I am just not convinced that the 2003 should be grouped with the older generation Expeditions, but rather with the 2004 and up.

Can someone smarter than myself please clarify this for me?

O.K. I'll ask it in a different way...

What are the tuner options for a 2003 Expedition 4.6l?

Is the Superchips 1715 the right one, or is it the 1714, which supports the 2004 and up models? And yes, I have visited the Superchips website and I know they are smart guys over there. But I have also seen hundreds of adds for stuff that supposedly supports the "1997-2003" Expy's, mistakenly based on the fact that they assume the Expy changed over the same year as the F-150.

Will the Edge Evolution work on this truck? Motorhaven's website has no listing for the Expy, but other sites I have seen say it does support the 2003 model...

Is the 2003 Expedition just the odd man out when it comes to the Expy/F-150 similarities and 2003/04 changovers?

Just found this on edgeproducts.com FAQ section:

Q: WHY WON’T MY 2003 EXPEDITION PROGRAM?
A:
In 2003, some models of Expeditions were fitted with a new style PCM that is not
compatible with the current Evolution. This is easily noted by lack of any
communications between the Evolution and the vehicle. The Diagnostic
Functions and Performance functions will not operate and only display
“Communication Error.” Please return your Evolution to place of purchase for a
full refund.

So, there was appearantly a PCM change mid-year?
No I am really puzzled...

Any help?

The earlier computers are "EEC-V" computers. The newer computer is a CAN-bus computer. The CAN bus computer can be identified by it having 3 wiring harnesses bolted to it, the EEC-V has one bolted to it.

The reason why MotorHaven doesn't list it is because people blame us when then tuner doesn't work with their mid-year change computer and it costs most to handle returns.

Your best bet for a 2003 Expedition is to get an SCT Xcalibrator2 http://www.motorhaven.com/catalog/pr...equipped_.html programmed for your Expedition's PCM code. Its feature rich and delivers a lot of power.

O.K. well I'm pretty sure I have the new style. If that is the case, then would I be safe in assuming the Edge would NOT work?
And if I have the new style, then would the Superchips 1714 be the correct unit?

I like the XCAL2 features and have heard good results, but I also like the in-cab features of the Edge, but if it won't work, the it would be between the SCT and Supechips.
What is the PN for the custom programmable SCT offering?
