Tow rating?

I just purchased a Exp.03 eb. I cant seem to figure out what the tow rating is on it. The dealer told me 8900 lbs but he just seemed to spit out what I wanted to hear. I am not sure if it has the heavy duty tow package. It does have both the four and seven pin connector on the rear. It has the advanctrac and the 3.73 rear non locking axle. Any help would be great.

most likely because it has the 7 pin adapter its the upgraded tow package. that rating is roughly 8900 (depending on if its a 4x2 v. 4x4) but only while using a weight distribution hitch from what i've heard. otherwise i think its 6000.

The EB comes with Class IV towing.
8600lbs 4x4
8900lbs 4x2

You can tow that much but not for long. 80% of that rating is a safe zone.

Not ever EB comes with that tow package. There are some with a class III which has the smaller tranny cooler, no 7-pin adapter and are rated for only 6000lbs.

I thought the 03+ EB were Class IV standard. I could be wrong.

There's an option (i have an '04) that cost about $350. its the same hitch, but comes with a bigger tranny cooler, larger radiator and 7 pin adapter that they classify as a Class IV. I've been told that adding a bigger tranny cooler to my will allow it to go from a max of 6000 to 8600 pounds because i don't need the 7 pin adapter and i don't tow in real hot climates which would require the bigger radiator. just need to make sure the tranny fluid stays cool. but "structurally" they are the same.

Thanks guys. I have an 8000 lb boat that I need to get into and out of the water. With trailer and everything its about 9500 lb. I have used my older Grand Cherokee to pull it up and down the ramp but never down the road. I was hoping the Expedition would be able to get me there. I only need to take it about 15 miles flat road. Not sure if I should chance it or not.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it all. 15 miles on flat road isn't a big deal. especially if its at moderate speeds. it will probably squat the rear end some. use you're own judgment and see how it handles it. you could always use a weight distribution hitch. that would help. my boat and gear are about 7500lbs.
what kind of boat do you have? must be a big one.

The boat is a Monterey 296 cruiser. It has twin 5.0l and a generator so its got some weight. I have it on a tripple axle trailer so the tounge weight is only about 800 lbs. I ordered my build sheet from ford and I dont notice the heavy duty tow pkge but not sure if that was an option in 03. The new exp. I have looked at list it.

Whoa, that's a sweet boat. I considered a Monty 298ss for a little bit then decided I couldn't justify the size or the expense. Ended up with a FW 260. In '03, that package may have been standard. but don't know. kind of silly not to make it standard if you ask me for $300+. triple axle trailer will definitely help.

The tow package was indeed an option on 03 Expy's. Without that option, it's only rated at 6000 lbs with a class III hitch. The biggest difference with standard equipment betwen 03 and 04+ is the rear differential. The 03's came with a limited slip diff standard. With the 04+ it became an option (not available with AdvanceTrac).

My 03 has the 3.73 non LSD rear. I do have advance trac though. Any way of finding out if I have the tow pkg. or not? I have the 7 pin and 4 pin connector. Not sure if that makes and differance though.

TDN,

you will notice on the door sticker LSD was 350.00 more over the cost of the 350.00 tow package. both were 700.00 combined. only the 4x2 expy has the tow rating of 8,900 lbs the 4x4 is rated at 8,600 lbs.

You can't have LSD & AdvanceTrac.

With a factory 4 pin & 7 pin, you have Class IV towing package in 03.

Cool thats what I was thinking but I didnt see the tow pkg on my build sheet. Maybe because it was standard with the EB or something. The tow pkg. was one of the things I really wanted. The Navagation system is crap.
