hcfm cap removal

After having to change the fuel filters on the road side, I have screwed the hcfm cap on beyond the max torque specs. I had to change the filters using a monkey wrench and now the cap is way over torque and the socket head is damaged. "Lessoned learned-Always carry the important tools with you."

Is there a writeup on removing the hcfm unit from the truck , I believe it will be easier replacing the cap on the bench. It looks straight forward. My concern is having the correct fuel line removal tool. Is this tool diesel specific?
Thanks Mike Kelly

Disconnect both battery ground cables

Open the fuel/water separator drain valve to release the fuel pressure
  • Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector.
  • Disconnect the fuel warmer electrical connector.
  • Disconnect the water-in-fuel electrical connector
  1. Remove the fuel hose retaining clips and discard. Disconnect the fuel hoses from the fuel pump.
  2. Press in the retaining clips and release the fuel hoses.
Remove the mounting nuts and the fuel conditioning module

Fuel Line Disconnect Tool- HFCM
310-S039 (T90T-9550-S)

Lines coming from the tank use this tool. The retaining clips are lines out to the engine.

Thanks to Maxium4x4 for the information and instructions. After finding the correct tool, the total time to repair was less than two hours. New cap and filters installed and she is running great. Thanks Again Mike Kelly

My brother borrowed it from a dealer service mechanic. A good friend. I was lucky not having to purchase the tool. Thanks again, Mike

hcfm cap removal

Ok I'm learning that their is alot of difference between my old 97 F250 7.3 and my now 05 F350 6.0. I discovered yesterday changing the fuel/water separator (on frame) is not as easy as I thought it would be. Could somebody please tell me what size the socket head is on the hcfm cap since apparently I do not have the correct size to fit it and it looks to me that a regular oil filter wrench will fit but I want to me sure before I go buy either socket or oil filter wrench or both. Thanks in advance for any help in this matter

Snap On, ( and others) also makes a perfect part for this. Snap On's is part number S3624. It has a 36mm socket on one side and 24mm on the other side with a 3/8" drive hole in the middle. Use 36mm for oil filter cover and HFCM. Flip it over and use the 24mm side for your topside fuel filter cover. It was only about $22.00 on the Snap on truck. " I didn't think there was anything that cheap on that truck". It has worked great for me. Numerous friends have wanted to relieve me of it's ownership, so keep an eye on it.

I have had success removing the plastic cap using a standard oil filter wrench on the outside diameter of the cap. Might save you from having to remove the entire HFCM.

If your replacing the cap you could have just used a chisel and hammer. The plastic breaks up pretty easily.

Thanks Big Red very helpful I ordered one online from Snap on just as soon as I read this!! Price up a little ($30.00) but I think it will be well worth it since it fits all 3 filters
