Havnt done much to the truck due to recent family illness but took it out for a drive & it ran like a dog (6 cylinders tops). I pulled the valve covers off r/h side ok but lh side was missing 2 pushrods ( in the sump?sorry oil pan)
Rockers for cylinders 5&6 were dry looking all others were oily. To replace rockers ,shafts ,lifters & possibly cam is it possible just to take the oil pan off or do the heads have to come off as well? Is there any parts supplier you would recomend as I am in the UK and Y block bits are rare, thanks _mattey
A cam change in a 292 is a bear as the engine literaly has to be upside down to remove and install the lifters. They are also noted to drop push rods into neverland...The oil pan. Sounds like excessive wear on the cam allowed the drop of the rods.
The Y block is a noted problematic top oiler. there are piping kits out there on E bay to help with this.
A good source of Y block parts and expertise is John Mummert here in the US.. google his name and his web site should be avalible.
Thanks for your speedy reply. From the look of the rockers it looks as if 5& 6 rockers have not been getting oil. I do know that Y's have a reputation for weak valve gear especially if they are left standing so hopefully its not everything thats shot, anyway thank you for your help as information is thin on the ground here yours Jon Mattey
why do want to change the cam.look down the pushrod holes and if they didnt bend they may still be there.i often fished them out.if not pull intake and the cover under it and thats where they are.its not uncommon to bend pushrods.you may have a couple valves sticking.
Thanks 312 l'll try that first, all the trouble seems to be on the drivers side. As I said5&6 seemed dry of oil & one pushrod to each cylinder was missing, I hope your right 'cos I prefer to take off manifold than oil pan. Maybe I should take off head to clean oilway to rockers & check valves , anyway thanks for that Jon Mattey
i wouldnt take of the head they usually plug down farther.if your getting oil to some rockers then oil is getting up.do you drive it much.there are holes in the rocker arm shafts that may be plugged with crap.
Jon I would suspect the hole being plugged like 312 says. I would remove the rocker shaft assembly and take it apart and clean all the parts paying particular attention to the oil holes. The oil comes from the rear of the shaft and travels foward. 5&6 would be at the dead end thus trapping any crud and plugging the oil holes. Check the shaft for galling it sounds like the rockers got starved for oil then got hot and real tight thats typically when the pushrod will bend. If you get it all sorted out and running properly but it smokes alot on srartup you may have damaged your valve seals also. Good luck, Rich.
