Door hinges

I have a '49 F2. What's the secret to driving the pins out of the door hinges? I've tried heat but they won't budge. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Welcome to the board!!! You have found the place to get all of your questions answered (and sometimes even correctly) There are tons of folks here with tons of knowledge and experience that can usually help you out.

Now for the hinge pins. First, you have to cut off the head of a chicken on the night before the full moon and dance around half naked in a counter clockwise fashion while sipping a tea made from the berries of the wild oopahuguwari bush that have been harvested during the middle of the monsoon season from a remote island in the south pacific........

.....but I digress. I think most of the guys here have had decent luck with pressign them out in a press. this leads to the next hassle...how to get the hinges off of the truck, and where to find replacement screws, etc, etc, etc

You should be able to do a search and get tons of info as this topic comes up quite a bit. Go to the search button, and then do an advanced search and search through this forum.....

When you get a chance take some pics of your truck and set up a gallery so that we all can check it out. We love to see trucks!

Good luck
Bobby

I soaked mine in PB blaster for about a week before I even tried. Then, I removed the door from the truck with hinges attached, flipped the door upside down so I could rest the hinge on top of my bench vise, then drove them out with a drift and a 5 lb sledge. If they don't move right away, lay on some more PB blaster and try again the next day. The main thing is not to get too excited if they don't move right away. You need patience...they will eventually come out.

Door hinges

Thank you Vern. I was going to remove the doors from the cab as you said but they are spot welded. I guess I'll have to cut/grind the welds and proceed as you suggested.

Bill,

Mine are spot welded also. I've seen some of these trucks witht ehm spot welded and others that weren't. When you get the welds cut through, use a #4 phillips bit in an impact driver to loosen the screws. Sometimes you get lucky and they come out, other times you have to drill them out.

Good luck,
Bobby

I ground out the spot welds and got the hinges off, but now I'm having a heck of a time trying to get the doors lined back up. Have to wait on a buddy to come help hold the door up to get it done. But there was a bit of rust behind that hinge so I'm still glad I took it off.

Sawzall worked for me. But I don't plan on using that style hinge.

Welcome to the forum Bill.

As previously mentioned, the one thing you don't want to do is start wailing away on the pins without supporting them properly. You'll end up messing up the door and cab hinge areas and probably the hinges as well. Short of a custom-built heavy-duty portable press fixture, I don't think there is any good way to do the job without removing the doors.

I broke the screws loose with an impact driver and then put the phillips bit in an impact wrench and they came right out.

Vern,
I havaent tried mine yet. I've taken several doors off of parts trucks. I was able to get approx half of the screws out with a #4 bit in an impact driver, the rest I had to drill. One of the parts trucks was in a wrecking yard, I hit the screws with a 5/16" bit until I drilled through the tapered part of the screw head andit popped off. I didn't have to worry about pulling the remaining part of the screw out of the hinge pillar. I guess I better start soaking my screws with rust penetrant now so that maybe by mid summer they will be ready to come out.

I'm not looking forward to mesing withthe hinge pins (especially since I'm fresh out of the oopahuguwari bush berries)

They will come out but penetrant (PB Blaster preferred, WD-40 as an alternate), a #4 Phillips bit, an impat driver, and a great big Gosh Dangit hammer are required. Sears has a real nice impact driver for around $30.00. I broke the #4 Phillips bit though and had a rough time getting new ones so when I fianlly found the part number for the #4 Phillips bit, I ordered a 1/2 dozen of them. No problem with running out now.
