Engine Swap

i am looking for a 302 engine to go into a 78 f-100. i was wondering, when looking for an engine, does it matter what year the engine is made for or would any carburated 302 work. also, where is a good place to look for engines? thanks for your time.

Any 302 will bolt in there physically. If you are planning to use the existing tranny then you need to stay away from the late model stuff, anything before '85 should work.

Where to look for engines depends on what you want. Plenty of smallblocks in salvage yards to re-build, or re-build yours if the block/heads are not cracked. either option will run $1000 or more if you aren't going to do it yourself.

Most of the big auto parts chains sell remanufactured long-blocks for around $500.
