I have a 2000 Excursion limited 2wd with the 5.4 motor. Gear Ratio is the 3.73. My question is how big an auxilary transmission cooler do I have? Or does it use the Radiator only to cool the tranny like my earlier GM's did?
I get mixed answers locally, and was curious if our members could tell me where to look or what may have come with the truck from the factory.
I bought it used so I do not have the factory paperwork on the options.
I am certain I need the extra cooling a separate unit would provide.
Before you go that far, install a temp gauge and see how hot it really gets. Mine rarely gets over 150*. All I have is a deep tranny pan(4 extra qts), stock cooler, and the V10, 4x4.
I was thinking I was going to need the Tru-cool big *** cooler, but I haven't seen it get warmer than 175* once.

It depends on when in 2000 it was built. Earlier 2000's had only an air to water cooler. During the year they added a cooler in the radiator because they found that the one cooler wasn't enough, especially at low speeds and high loads, such as backing a trailer.
I just looked at my 01 Excursion and found that there is a cooler between the condenser and the radiator. It looks ok in size but anyone replace it with something bigger? I will be towing 9000# in summer and I want to make sure the sizzling I hear is the eggs on the pan not the tranny.
[QUOTE=T- Squared]I put a Perma-Cool remote oil filter on our '01 that has the temp sender and gauge included in the kit. I did this to see if an additional cooler is needed for our needs. Towing our 7K boat and trailer we never see more than 150 going down the highway. Where it will heat up a bit, up into the 180 range, is in traffic and on secondary roads where you have a bunch of stop and go stuff. The only time we even come close to going over 200 is when I have to back the boat up our pretty steep driveway. I just ler her idle a few minutes before doing this to bring the temps down. I've read here that a lot of trannys get overheated at campgrounds when backing up the larger campers over soft ground or up hills---lots of load and very little airfow.
When I replaced my tranny the builder would not warrant the unit if i used the stock oil/water cooler. I now have a tru-cool and the stock oil/air cooler, and never seen above 150*. I don't tow heavy, but if i did i'd get a fan on a t'stat and mount to the tru-cool if needed.
Is the stock one an oil water tho? I seem to see an air cooler sandwiched between the radiator and condenser. Maybe that is the 2nd one since it went thru the radiator first?

You got it. The upstream one is the one in the radiator. TSB says it cannot be properly flushed and is prone to clogging. Second hand info, never seen the TSB from FORD, only Jasper.
