Sorry for this not being a truck question, but I need the assistance of all you FE guru's.
I'm ever so slowly rebuilding my '68 Merc. Montego MX (torino), and have run into a wall trying to find headers for the 390. A guy at work told me that his '68 truck headers run very close to the block, and might just squeeze in there, but I haven't had a chance to look in there.
All opinions/advice/sources/lies/stories, anything ya' got, are welcome.

The only headers I have ever seen that FIT the 390-428 in the Torino and Mustang were Hookers. I don't know if they are still available, but the last set I bought were expensive, and very time consuming to put on. But they did fit that tight engine compartment.
Hooker headers should still have the application. They only come in the super comps though and are pricey new. I found a set before used from a mustang restorer for $20.00. They were in great shape and went on a 67 coupe 6cyl to 390 GT conversion.
Looking back I would not wish that pain on anyone trying to install those headers. I mean I'm talking about cutting the flanges to individual tubes, disconnecting the front suspension, and the amazing amount of room you have to barely get a header bolt in there.
Oh my that was at least 7 years ago and I think I am going to have nightmares about it again.
I soooo much agree. i just finished installing a set of headers on my 77 F150 and it was such a pain. It took forever, I had to jack up the motor and disconnect everything, not to mention going through the wheel well just to get to some of the bolts. I have not noticed any performance or mileage increases, just louder exhaust that I had to weld up. I can only say if I had to do it all over again I would just stick with stock exhaust or maybe shorties. But then again, shorties cost a bunch....
