This may be off-topic, but I didn't know of a better forum.
I have a 01 F-150 extended cab. I don't have enough room for my tools, jacks, come alongs, etc... to keep under the back seat and still have room for people to sit there. I don't like tool boxes in the bed because I barely have enough room as it is now (flare-side) to cary mattresses, couches, washing machines, etc...
What I would like is an under the bed storage compartment, something like the new Honda Ridgeline's have:
There isn't a lot of room under there, but I think there is enough between the leaf springs to put a box that would contain the tire and enough extra room for other stuff.
Has anyone ever tried this? I nervous to be the first because I don't know what types of problems I could run into.
I'd say its possible, but you'd have to cut a hole in the bed, and your spare tire is gonna be bigger than the honda's
I know, but there is already a space in between the bumper, leaf springs, and rear axle where the spare is now. If I can enclose that area, I could put other stuff there too.
Have you seen the boxes that go into the bed of the truck, fill the length and width of the bed, and the draw slides out on rollers? That would leave your whole bed available and only take 8 inches of vertical height from the bed. They have a drawer capacity of 800 pounds or so.
My big question about these under the floor storage trunks is, what happens when I blow a tire while hauling a load of gravel? Is there any other way to get the spare out?
I realize that and agree. I just keep hearing all these people saying how neat the idea is, and I want to point out how big of a problem it could be in a real truck. I know I would love to have a small storage area like that but I definitley wouldn't want my jack and spare tire in there unless there was another way to get it out.

Thats because the Ridgeline is a Accord put on stilts. Its never going to carry anything except the wifes grocery.
I built a small place to put a cheap tool box in the front corner of the bed in my work truck. Granted I have a Camper, but I thought I could do it in my personal truck to. It only takes up about two foot by one foot depth, and I carry all of my work tools in it.

And what happens if your truck goes off the bridge and into the river, and you can't get out because the power windows won't work under water? People have used this excuse for years to claim power windows were unsafe, but when was the last time you heard of someone drowning in their power window-equipped vehicle? My point is: you can come up with a reason to dislike ANYTHING, but please tell me: how many flats have you had while the bed was full? I mentioned in another forum here that I thought the underbed storage was a great idea on Honda's part, and people jumped all over me. Now, if FORD had thought of it first, a lot of people here would think it's a GREAT idea. Sour grapes, if you ask me. The Ridgeline may not be a real truck, but you can still allow that it has some good ideas.
It is a good idea, but beerstalker does have a valid point. If you're hauling anything and get a flat, you're going to have to unload it to get to the storage bin. And if you have tools in there, what if something breaks while you're hauling something.
Good idea, but i think there should be another 'emergency' way to get to it.
And its the only good idea on the ridgeline if you ask me..
I've had a flat while hauling a load. I know people that have had flats while hauling loads. I don't know anyone who has ran off the road into water wand their power windows wouldn't work.
As for the Hondas great under the bed storage box for their spare, if it has a quick release side compartment for access from the under side, then yes, its a good idea. If it doesn't have that, then no, its a bad idea. I don't want to unload anything to get to the spare. It sucks doing it in a car, it sucks doing it in a truck. Oh, thats right, they are one in the same.
