I have a 84 F-250 5.8L 351W. I bought it for 200 bucks from my best friend. It needs a new distributor some teeth got stripped off (thats a new one for me). I want to buy a new igniton. What coil and distr. and wires and plugs should I getthat I can use later in my performance upgrades on this engine. Its going tog et stroked with a 750 carb on it or maybe blown with a 1120 carb no idea at this point just its going to get more power later about a year is projected.
There are so many ignitions on the market these days, it's tough to answer that one. A lot of it is personal preference for one brand over another. You could go with the D.U.I. distributor which is basically a GM H.E.I. unit with the coil in the distributor cap and the module inside the distributor so it's basically a one-wire hookup. Some people have a problem with using what amounts to a Chevy distributor on a Ford however...
Plugs and wires are really a more personal preference. Some people like the Autolite double platinum plugs, some insist on copper only. I use Autolite or Motorcraft almost exclusively, but the I do on occasion use others. The only plug I won't use is Champion.
Wires...the sky's the limit there. The main consideration is probably resistor core so you don't get any interference with any electronics (stereo, CB, whatever) and whether you want custom tailored or universal fit (you cut to length and install the ends yourself) and size. 7mm, 8mm, 10mm, the thicker ones are supposed to be better insulated to prevent any spark leakage on high-voltage systems. Oh, and don't forget color choice!
