Hi everyone, I am looking for black nerf bars for my F-150 and saw many on EBay. There were some listed for $99 and $50 for shipping which is a really good price. They are selling for that cheap because it says that they are good quality but just don't have a brand name on the step pads like others. They look good in the picture but I'm just alittle hesitant to buy them because as the saying goes you get what you pay for. Any advice? There were also some from Smittybuilt brand for around $180. Does anyone have either of these nerf bars or does anyone have any suggestions for another brand? Thanks alot, Christie =)
It has been my experience that any powder coated bolt on accesory will start to rust within 12-18 months. Ofcourse, I live in Ohio...but my point remains the same. If you can get a good deal, go for it. I can't believe that the others are $100 better.
If it were me, I'd buy the stainless steel. They'll look better longer and the only rust you have to worry about is on the brackets. I'm sure you're considering black for the looks, just thought you'd want to keep that in mind
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I was wondering if anyone who has black nerf bars on their trucks can post any pictures that they have and what brand so I can see what they look like if possible, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks,
Christie =)
I have Westin nerf bars on my Excursion. I went with the black powder coated because my Ex has no chrome at all, its custom painted monochromatic dark green. The bars are 12 months old, not rusted.....yet.....but they sure show the abuse of 3 kids sliding on and off them for a year. My next pair will end up being stainless, I think they show the abuse and scratching less. I have seen a couple friends with cheap nerf bars, and what I dont like is how weak the brackets are designed...in that they flex a noticable amount when a 180-200 lb man steps on them. Your better known brands have nice thick brackets and many have a stiffening ridge pressed into them...sort of like the crease in your hood. I dont like junk, even if its cheap. I would jump on the smittybuilt bars for $180 in an instant over a no-name bar for $99.
If you have any questions, feel free to yell at us.
Thanks for the response. I also saw some of the Westin bars and was considering them also. Now I'm unsure of whether I want the stainless steal or black bars. I like the look of the black bars because I have a dark grey truck but I also have the chrome bumpers so the stainless steal would match those. Decisions decisions...
Thanks,
Christie =)
Christie_05, I have a dark grey truck too (nice taste!) and it came with stainless bars. I have painted bumpers. Stainless looks nice but the black I think would like nice too. But since you dont have painted bumpers maybe stainless would look better on your truck.
The thing about the black coated bars, is that they WILL without a doubt rust if you live in the North. I am from PA, so if its not stainless, its rusted. If your from say...Texas or someplace similar, I can understand the black bars, they dont rust down there I would assume. If from up here in salt country....and you do not want to be replacing them in 2 years...go stainless and do it once. Save money for another month if you have to, its going to be cheaper in the long run to do stainless once than carbon steel 2 or 3 times in 5 or 6 years.
I have an '05 f-150 ext. cab and i have been saving for westin's wheel-to-wheel bars. they are quite a bit more money ($530) but they will allow for easier access to the front of the bed. they also are either stainless or black, but their black powder coat is over stainless so they should not rust any quicker than the stainless.
Hillyer...
Westin 23-2350 Stainless bars?
Westin 24-4120 Chrome over stainless?
Westin 24-4125 Black Powder coated stainless?
What one are you looking at, cause they are no where near 530 bucks, as a matter of fact if you buy these bars and start with 530 in your hands, your going to have enough left to take your wife to a hotel for a night that weekend for an little escape...and pay for the cheap champaign.....you aint checking prices at the right guys! Give me a call or email, I can make the time you spend saving considerable less!
The only brand that offers 100% stainless steel, including the mounting brackets, bolts, and washers, is Nasta. The mounting brackets, bolts, and washers of other brands may be powdercoated steel or galvanized even though you're buying "stainless steel nerf bars".

truckdaddy-I have a line-x bedliner in my truck and I was wondering how to clean it. Is there a certain type of cleaner that I should be using to maintain it?
Christie
1. Scrub the liner with a stiff brush, water, and automotive soap. Scrub the SNOT out of it!
2. Let it completely dry.
3. Apply Just Once (www.justonce.com) or any other "Armorall" type product that does not contain any silicone or oils, which would make your liner slippery. We like Just Once, though. The liner will soak up a bunch of Just Once on your first application.
4. Apply another coat of Just Once a few times a year.
That's it, color is restored and looks great!
I've heard of others using Mop N Glo and even carburetor cleaner, but I've never tried it.
Everybody likes pics, so, here's a LINE-X color match (NO-fading!):
