Take it in at 3000. It's best to check it early so the dealer can see if there are any problems. I usually go 4,000 - 4,200 after that. Hope that helps.

The very best way to know for SURE what a good oil change interval is would be to have an oil analysis done.

I've used Blackstone Labs for years. $18 gets you a full analysis.

CMOS,

A UOA is a waste of money on a new engine. Even blackstone says so. The wear metals will be off the chart due to the engine being new and you can't tell a thing from them. 10,000 miles is a good start then sample every 10,000 from there.

paul812...If you're doing it yourself, do a favor and buy a Fumoto quick-drain valve to put on while you have the pan drained...it makes oil changes a breeze.

Also keep in mind the factory-installed filter can be a real bear to get off; it's put on without a film of oil on the gasket and torqued down by a gorilla. Do a search and you'll find lots of info on which filter removal tool to buy (I have the Sears 3-pronged grabber, works like a charm).

I did my initial oil change at 1,500mi, then went to the dealer for the 5,000mi and got the PCM reflashed at the same time. Since then I've done all the subsequent oil changes; very easy.

bigwobbely...in the earlier builds (mine Feb04) there was a real bad throttle lag. The reflash took some of that away.

At least that's why I had it done.

When you do a Pcm or a Ecm reflash you get all of the current updates there are for your truck. it's like having the latest tune up and trans upgrade settings done.

It's well worth it I would say, try to get it done under warranty if you can.
On my 97 the dealer did two refalshes for free, then two years later out of warranty I had to pay $75.00 for one do to a tranny problem.
