LAST EDITED ON 18-Jul-01 AT 08:23 PM (EST)[p]It is usually easier to use the sending unit that came with the tank. That way you know it fits the tank and (hopefully) reads full and empty at the right level.

I think just about every Ford sending unit has 73 ohms empty and a small to zero resistance when full. If so it'll work with your gauge. You can measure the resistance of the "new" sending unit as you run the float up and down. Also you can connect a variable resistor (or different fixed ones) to the lead from your dash gauge (to ground)and see what values make it read full and empty.

I'm putting a 30 gal. side-mounted tank (which I got at the scrapyard without a sending unit) on my F-350 and the manufacturer, Riverside Tank, says all Ford and Dodge medium trucks have a 75 to 10 ohm unit. I wonder if that should be 1.0. My gauge says full at 3 ohms and about 3/4 full at 10 ohms, but the dash regulator may not be correct any more. Anyway I ordered one from them ($28.50 plus UPS) and I'll see how it works when I get it installed!

10 - 73 ohms is the Ford spec for the range. You might be picking up additional resistance through the connections. Shorting the sender lead wire to ground should peg the needle.

What year and size of tank? I'd like to get the tank out of the cab of my 69 F100 2wd, but I don't know what to look for as a replacement. Does anyone know if a frame-mount tank for a 73 model will fit my 69 (yes, I know that I'll have to cut the body for the fill tube)?

ksd, I didn't get a pickup tank, it's a box about 12" deep x 27" long x 23" wide. Made by Riverside Tank in ##### Clair MI in 1986, their model HN-30. The junkyard told me it was a fuel tank for a reefer trailer. It mounts with large L-brackets and encircling straps. I have a steel flatbed/wood stakebody on my truck, so mounting it on the framerail was easy. Sorry, I don't know what it would take to fit (or even if there would be room for such a tank) under a pickup with a conventional bed.

Barry, thanks for confirming the Ford resistance.
