Hey Oats, what state you from? At least what part of the country?

I believe you. We got over zealous idiots right here. I know people who were turned in for tax issues. You just never know, ya know, who you can trust.

Geez. Tuff crowd. Ever been drinking and someone tells a story and you call BS. It is just a way to have fun and get more details. I really was not out right calling you a liar....just hard to believe. I am glad you acknowlege that. I do apologize if I riled you up.

With that said, I was hoping to get more details. Like, what did you do, where did you go to get caught and what was the fines or charges or whatever that you were to face.

Hey X, Just so you know, read through this thread and get a feel for the tone. There are pretty strong opinions (apparently) on this subject. A few boughts of name calling, rudeness and inconsideration for opposing opinion.

Sorry you had your experience here. Sorry any of us did. I'd recommend this one be CLOSED.

Hello pot, this is kettle, your black.
You get upset because i called you an idiot, yet you call some guys (probably me) knuckleheads????
I did my best to give scientific proof to what I was saying, and you get upset because it doesn't agree with what you believe.

Oats, that sucks what happened to you. Here in CAli, the most the fine could be is $2500.00 per cat. We have only one on the 6.0L PSD. Just curious, who came to arrest you? Sheriff, county, State?

It's ironic that it happened to me at all because there are gobs of noisy illegally modified ricers running around all over the place with no problem and here I am a middle-aged family man who works as an engineer and I get it.

Funny you mentioned the stakeout scenario.....when they were serving me a warrant at my work they told me that they had a team of officers at my house because they had been watching my house and knew the vehicle was there. They gave me the option of letting them in or they would force their way in. No BS, its even taperecorded somewhere in theie case file.

There is intelligent government spending. Let’s pay a dozen agents to follow around and do surveillance on the middle aged guy who removed the cat of his vehicle. I wonder how many man hours they racked up on the tax payers tab for that one. Thank God the government is protecting us from guys like you.

I'm in Anchorage, Alaska. City of about 400,000 I think, so we do get air quality issues in the winter when the dense air doesn't move out of the valleys. There were actually only six agents involved, enough for sure. Gobs of stupid man hours spent on this one. I didn't get arrested, only my car did. Our emission program was adopted from the CA program back in the '80s. Pretty harsh penalties for air quality violations here. Each day an illegal vehicle is operated on the road is a considered a new violation so it adds up quickly. The State lead the charge...it was the Environmental Crimes Unit of the DEC, if you can believe that. They charged me with a Class B misdemor. Same thing the guy who crashed the Exxon Valdez got. They made a technical oversight on some of the facts and after a year of banter back and forth it pleaded down to a notice of violation (NOV). I paid a few hundred dollar fine and had to return the vehicle to stock. They kept my chip as a forfieture. Also, as a point of clarity this wasn't on a diesel or even a pickup, but rather on a Mustang. If you want to know anything else let me know.

Thumbs down state takes things

why keep the chip? with out knowing the software on it and how it would make it out of spec's for your state?I would want to know what they did with it !
this sound really wired, not calling you a liar but I have never heard such things, I have heard of cars getting check when pulled over and fined , but to impound.. and take parts of the car.?
can you post your fine. I would like to see it if you don't mind
thanks, by the I take the cat off of every thing I own and have chips/programs.
its my way of sticking it to the man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(and sucking down the gas/diesel!, the American way !!)

The majority of people in this country want to believe that things like this don't happen. The truth is they happen all the time, you just don't hear alot about them. All it takes is one over zealous g-man to stir up trouble for the little guy. If you think that the EPA and all the other Depts only go after the big corporations, you really do need to "pull your head out", as Oats says. Hell, even a 3.5 Hp Briggs and Stratton lawn mower is getting EPA treatment. A lawn mower for goodness sakes.

I seem to remember a few years back of a program bandied about that would have rewarded people for turning in violators. Perhaps I am wrong. But the day is probably coming, sooner rather than later.

Thank God Al Gore lost!!!

!!!
ok..epa on lawn mower ....yes in the spec's they make it too. but you go mod you lawn mower and no one cares....just like the tag on the mattress, I PULLED MINE OFF !!
now i know thats not the same on you car/truck. but putting people on the pay roll to chase the little guy. not very offen, you wana know why , because it does not pay, you go after me, you get what i got..not much ..you go after sears, etc for making illegal mod's to you exhaust , and you can fine the heck out of them and make money.
so i can see you getting pulled over and the cop check and you got no cat on your truck and you get a ticket...but to pay him to goto you house to check...i have a hard time on this.

I hope your just making a point. After all, its your mattress, you are allowed to pull it off!!

Anyway, I happen to believe the guy only because I have read over the years about similiar things happening to others, and I know people who have had the state come after them on revenue (tax) law violations and I'm not talking income tax evasion either.

Lawn mowers actually cause many many times more smog per gallon of fuel burned than cars do. They are a legitimate concern for environmental agencies. Weed wackers and leaf blows are I think even worse.

If you don't have more than a 1/3 acre to mow, consider going electric.
