A diesel is made to idle at extended times and should not cause that. It sounds more like a poorly designed CAT which is basically useless on a diesel anyway......

So, if they weren't designed to idle at extended periods of time why do truckers let them run all night long while they sleep if it is hard on them?

Answering a question with a question doesn't explain your statement. Why is it that you believe that diesel engines were made for extended idling?

Believe it or not, a properly maintained diesel engine will last longer at about 1300 RPM instead of idle. The reason is that at idle the rocker arms are under pressure for a longer period of time compared to being ran at 1300. Also at idle, there is more chance of carbon build up due to unburned fuel. You see the diesel engine is not nearly as economic at idle compared to being ran under load and at a higher RPM. BUT, ideling in the morning to warm up the engine for about 2-3 minutes is not bad, ideling for 30 minutes BAD.

There's an EDUCATED explaination for ya..... As I understand it, fuel diluted oil and washed down cylinder walls are other hazards of EXCESSIVE idleing.

'07 Heavy Truck 'Clean Diesel' equipment is also going to include 15 minute idle timers. Some folks 'll be rippin those off also.

Some things are done for reasons other than "it's good for ya" (or it).

Smokin, Excessive drinkin, and Drug abuse, ETC, ETC, ETC. Denial is a potent justification for a lot of things.

Pull your cats, unplug your EGR's, change your oil frequently, and idle till your heart's content.

I wish I had a psychology degree instead of an Astrophyics degree. That way I would know which side you were on. Call me stupid, but it sounds like you are degrading smokers, drinkers, and druggies. Well I resemble 1/3 of that remark. I appologize in advance if I misunderstand you, but it seems like you just want to argue with someone.

B, the more I look at your post, the more I would like you to e-mail me. My e-mail is Drtry10@***.net. I think your attitude is very detrimental to your actual beliefs. Trust me I would like to save the enviroment more then a lot of other people. But, I will not degrade them for doing what they want. I believe that saving the enviroment will only be done by intelligence, not ignorance.
"Pull your cats, unplug your EGR's, change your oil frequently, and idle till your heart's content." This sounds like a quote of someone who is not very knowledgeable!! Quit getting frustrated.

Give it up, Pal. A little sarcasm and humor is what my post was about. There's PLENTY of that around here, as well as rude, impolite and degrading content.

If you can't read a post and take it for what it's worth, or at least be civil in your unsolicited response, take a hike!

For what its worth, the truckers are typically using an elevated idle when sleeping...it smooths it out. I drove one of these for a couple of years and I as recall the owners manual to the 400 cummins stated that if idleing for an extended time it was reccomended to operate the truck for at least 30 minutes at hwy speeds. The objective was to burn off the fuel that was in oil from idling. I.E.: wet stacking.

Geez, sounds like the day after I bought my 06, junked the cat and unplugged the EGR. I must say I am a rebel without a cause and my only purpose is to **** off the environmentalists......
