ok the drain plug in my truck is rounded off...its really small and vice grips wont grip it...this is the first time i looked at it and i do not know how to get it out...any suggestions? thanks
I haven't run into anything I couldn't grab with vice grips. Do you have a pair of the straight jaw grips? Maybe a small pipe wrench? If all else fails, drill a hole, use E-Z out tool and then check the threads for problems.
Get a replacement plug and then take a chisel and cut "V" notches in the side of the plug in the direction that you'd turn it to remove it. THen use a screwdriver in the cuts you just made. Tap the screwdriver and keep doing until it loosens up. Just be careful not to damage pan. I've done this several times to get them out.
Or...take a cut-off wheel and grind a groove in the head of the drain plug (like a screw has) and use a large flat blade screwdriver bit on an impact driver. I've used this method many times.
Another option to remove broken or messed up bolts is to Mig weld another bolt to the head of the rounded over bolt.
Then you should be able to turn the "new" bolt and remove the old one.
Hope this helps
Steve
They also make sockets now specifically made for this situation. They have angled blades in them that kind of cut into the already ruined bolt head and dig in as you turn the socket. You can find them in Chinese form at most of your modern parts (three ring circus) stores like Advance, AZ, or Pep Boys. Might work...
