I have been quoted $80 yet again for a turn signal switch. Why does this little piece of plastic and contacts have to cost so much? The junkyards want $80 for an entire steering column (won't remove the switch), the dealer wants $75, and all the truck sites want $80!
Is this particular to my truck ('78, no-tilt, manual tranny, 4wd)? I'm told it can only take switches from a few models...
Boy I don't know what they are thinking but my '77 sounds like the same thing and its not $80. I would do some looking into the thing should just be a little keeper snapring and perhaps two wires. Took me about 20mins and 11$ for a part. Try digging into it and see what they are talking about I am curious to hear whats going on with this.

I have the same set up on my 78. The switch is $80 becuase it is not just a peice of plastic. This is the whole unit that the lever screws into. It has the harness that plugs into the main harness under the dash. The assembly is held on by 3 or 4 screws I forget. If you take off your steering wheel and look at the inside bottom you will see a cresent shaped cutout in the column. That is where the plug slips through. I have replace this switch assembly about 3 times in my 78 becuase I keep using junk yard ones. I finally found a new one on ebay for about 15 bucks. 80 bucks is not a bad price for the switch from Ford, considering all that is being replaced. I think you can buy the plastic cam itself for $5 but I have never tried this method.
Edit: You figure, that switch has lasted for about 20 years. 80 bucks for a new original equipment one it will probably last another 20.
People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
Hey, glad to see this topic- I need to replace mine in a 79 Bronco (no tilt/man trans-no column shift). Does anyone have a part number or manufacturer for this item? Most of the parts store counter dummies just say they don't have it when it doesn't pop up immediately on their monitors- thought a mfr. and part # might get them to get out the catalogs...
Thanks in advance!
Hey guys, I might be able to scrounge up a couple if you need them. I'll check, but what would you be willing to pay for a working, used one? (worth the time to see if I have on in the yard)
I just had to replace the switch on my 69 F100. I got quotes of $70-80 at most places, but then found a NOS switch for $50 right in my backyard (Memphis). Call Early Ford Parts at 901-323-2179.
One more thing - make sure you diagnose why your switch failed. Often, it's because a short elsewhere in the wiring harness caused excessive current flow through the switch and melted or deformed it. If that's the case, your new switch will fail before too long, too. Get out your ohmeter and check the voltage in all of the connections.
I got a quote of about $55 (after tax) for the large part of the switch for my '70 F-100. This isn't the crescent shaped part (that's so easy to find) - it's the one that goes around the end of the steering column and is the other part. This one was hard to come by. Tried Napa, Autozone, Carquest. Nobody carried it. Went to the dealership and they found me one. Should come in real soon.
Got the strangest look when I went up to the parts dept. for it too. Like the guy didn't know Ford was in business then or something.
The one I paid $50 for was the entire assembly, including the wiring harness that feeds through the column and plugs in under the dash (two connectors).
I had a little surprise when I went to put a grant wheel on my 79 after haveing put one on my 76. The turn signal switch and particularly the horn parts are significantly different from 78 on. I'm used to the idea that 73-79 are basically the same. I've found several things about my 79 that aren't. The clutch pedal hangs in a different way, the dash cluster electrical connectors are different. The turn/horn mechanism... I had to replace a turn signal switch in my 69 a couple of years ago. I was at a truck specialty wrecking yard, and in there showroom, was a rack of turn signal replacement switch assembly's I bought one for 40-50 bucks I seem to remember thinking it was pricey. It was a great installation. That one aspect of my 69 seemed brand new. It was an aftermarket brand but might as well have been OEM for its installation and operation.
