I recently put an autometer trans temp gauge on my 2000 F250 and while hauling a boat through town the temp got up to 200 degrees. What is the red line on the transmission and what might I do to lower the temp.
I have heard lots of different max temps for the tranny - but I think anything sustained temps much over 200*, and at the very least, you start shortening the life of the tranny fluid. You need to loook into an aftermarket tranny cooler.

Welcome to FTE jnelson789.
There's been a TON of posts on keeping your transmission cool through the use of transmission coolers. Try a search on the subject and see. You'll be reading for a month! Bottom line is you need to get a better cooler than Ford put in the truck if you want to tow and expect the transmission to last. Your search on the subject will provide the answers you need as to which one to choose. I cannot answer it for you - I have a six speed stick and (no offence) will never own another automatic.

Yep, 200 is headed for too hot (but not ythere yet). You can bump 220 for a few minutes but keeping it there is asking for trouble. I would (and did) add a larger oil to air cooler in line with the factory stuff. That should take care of all your temp problems.

i was seeing hot temps so i installed a tru-cool max trans cooler from www.dieselsite.com and i barely see temps over 100 but it is cold here and i havent pulled anything heavy. it was easy to put in and installs inline with your stock cooler. it is $115 i think

On Allison transmission we rebuild where I work they run upward to 200-250 in the pan. Anything over 250 ain't good. If you are reading the fluid from the torque convertor it will get up to 325 degrees. Sticking closer to 200 is what you want though. You want to keep the temp over 175 at least empty, so don't go to big on the cooler.
I put a tru-cool 4739 from the diesel site as well, works great all inline with existing cooler. If I were to do it again, i would look for a black one as mine is bare aluminum, great heat transfer that way but does look kinda funny through the grill, so now I am looking into getting some type of insert to cover the funny look.
Hi, I have heard that the ford 6.0 PSD tranny cooler added to the factory cooler on the 7.3 is a big plus. Not sure if it is any bigger than any aftermarket ones out there, but I'm gonna take mine in tuesday and try to get one installed. I also changed the fluid over to the Mercon 5 on my 250 right before I sold it..(Go figure) so I will be doing the exact same to the 350 but will be asking indepth questions about the 6.0 cooler....good luck and I will keep you up to date on the factory 6.0 cooler...unless someone out there has some better info for me.Thanks....

you do not want to run mercon 5 in the 4r100. the fluid should be regular mercon 3. if you want a different fluid you can use synthetic but personally i dont think its worth the money but you will have a lot of opinions on this. do not run mercon 5
i had the same temp readings... put on a big tru-cool in addition to the stock coolers.. solved the problem... i also put in a sonnax kit to help with the tranny shifts and put synthetic fluid in the tranny and the diffs and the transfer case... just buying a little extra protection against the heat and a little peace of mind... jmo...
jensol,
I had high temps as well .Went to the 6.0 cooler, ATS pan and syn fluid. I rarely see over 175 now. Before I would see 200 + with out towing. Then there was the time I saw 250 I had to do something. Good luck Alan
Ford Truck Racer - I haven't had my 7.3 very long and haven't towed yet but I never see temps above 125 and it's not cold here (Houston). Question: Why do we want the min temp at 175?
