you don't. the recommended temp for best performance is 120-140*. sure it is safe to run up to 200*, but the transmssion "feels" best at 140 or so. dont get into the power hard either, until the temps have risen.

sgrol,
You want it to warm up some. But not over say 150-200. Less is better I would think. The 175 is my max now. Alan

I hope you told the new buyer that you changed out the Trans fluids to Mercon 5, so that he could expect to buy another trans soon.

What is wrong with the Mercon 5?

I had it changed and flushed professionally by a local shop that specializes in Fords and PSD in particular. He was the chief truck mechanic at the local dealership, along with teaching automechanics at the local Technical College so I would have no reason to doubt his judgement. I pulled my 9500 pound 5er for about 11000 miles after the changeover and have had no problems at all....The only reason I sold the V-10 was the fact I got the chance to get this PSD and sold my F250. If I don't use the Mercon 5 what should I use or get him to use when I take it to him tuesday. I want to get the cooler and the fluid change done before Daytona....Thanks for any help...Dave

Mercon 3 is what I have heard to use, and Mercon 5 is a no-no for 4R100 transmissions..

Dexron III/Mercon, which is just regular Mercon. Not Mercon 5 or Mercon SP or any fluid rated for Mercon5 in it's multi use listings. A lot of "experts" don't know the difference between the fluid ratings. Part of the problem is some of the Ford manuals have it listed wrong when they look it up. Use what you want, (it's your truck afterall) but, DexronIII (Chevy rating)/ Mercon (Ford rating) is the proper fluid for these transmissions.
Not JMO, it's a fact.

sgrol, Main reason the trannys are at least that warm is cause they run the oil through the coolant to maintain the temp for best shifting and performance.
