has anyone towed a 30 ft 5tf. wheel camper in the mountains with a 1991 7.3 3.55 e40d if so how did it do? would like to take a trip out west need info. thanks
I have a 90, E350, srw, 3.55, and have towed that much with no problem. It was more than it was rated for but it seemed to work ok. That was with a hitch on the frame not a 5th wheel. It was not that long though, only 18'. I did not go over mountains. So I can't say about that. Mountains might be tough. And you will not be going real fast with an IDI, like a PSD. You should have a transmission temp gauge. Of course you know to have good trailer brakes etc. And your truck brakes should be checked. Also make sure your tires are rated for all the weight. You might want to check in the towing forum. They usually have the tow ratings there. Have you ever towed anything like that before with any truck? What about using the 06 in your profile?
yes we went to phoenix,az last may towing a 30 ft jayco done fair but on long grades it was slow had to lock overdrive out sometime, got some bad fuel made it tough till it ran out an i used a lot of fuel cond.
Keep it the OD turned off when you hit the mountains, running in OD will really heat up the tranny and I think that is why they put the button on the dash in the first place.
A larger tranny cooler and larger tranny cooler lines would be a good thing. (As a minimum make sure the tranny cooler is not plugged up with bugs as it is usually the first cooler ahead of the radiator.)
All E4OD tranny are overdrive tranny's. I believe they replaced the old C6 workhorse in or around 88/89.
One of the drawbacks of the E4OD is that there is a huge gear jump from 3rd (1:1) into OD (0.71:1) not very good for towing so it is best that you tow in 3rd with the OD off as you hit the mountains. On the flat the OD is probably ok to save fuel.
