Is it to any benifit to put dual 3" exhaust on my IDI non turbo 6.9? My mechanis says no, but he is not a big diesel person. Also what are the best mufflers that will give it that "awsome diesel performance" sound?
TIA
Todd
I don't know if there is a performance benifit, but dual exhaust sunds great. I like a straight through muffler or no muffler the best. Very big block rumble kind of sound.
With a NA engine I would go with dual 2.5" pipes.
Stock is 2.25" ID single pipe, so 2.5" ID duals would more than double the area in the pipe.
3" is a lot more expensive and you have to reduce it to 2.25" ID to get in the manifold clamps anyway.
Power and torque will benefit from the reduced back pressure.
I am tring to decide on either no mufflers or glass packs or mabey even turbo mufflers. What is your preference? I am looking for improved proformance, and a good deep throaty sound that is not too disturbingly loud but not too quiet either. Let me know.

I want to put a bigger exhaust on my truck(maybe dual 2.5") now and a turbo in the near future. I'm thinking 2" lift like Dave said and a nice 3" downpipe. How do I get a new exhaust now that will be ready for a turbo in a couple of months? Do I need to install the downpipe now with the new exhaust? What is the best way to do this so I can keep building on the system without any backtracking?
IH diesel....where have you found the banks exhaust for a 6.9??? I know they have one for the sidewinder kit but havent seen anything ealse. Id also suggest to ski the exhaust save some money and get the turbo cuz youll have to ditch the exhaust neways
Todd, If you like it way loud and lots of crackin pipes then go for it. Did the straight pipe on my old 90 E350IDI7.3 cargo van and my motorhome. Van was way to loud but I ran the three inch all the way to the back bumper on the M/H (30 foot) and You could not hear it from the drivers area. Flowmaster makes a good muf for these units. I have been told several times not to use glasspacks on diesels but I never ask why. The glasspack thing came from two old diesel techs and I did not want to dis them by asking why. anybody have any input on the glasspack thing....Bill
ive got a glasspack on mine.....no problems with it. My friend drives a peterbuilt and has ben around trucks all his life and says there aint nothing wrong with it
Talked to my exhuast guy in town today. He told me either way, with or without mufflewrs it's all about the same, untill you really get on it. He also told me for 2 1/2" duals it would be 375 to 400.00!! I crapped... I figured around 225.00 I'm like, all it is, is pipe man! No mufflers or nothin! He said it was alot of work....I think I will shop around....

my 89 f-350 7.3NA 4x4 has a 3 inch single pipe with a gasser 40 series flowmaster, it sounds awesome, not to much niose in the cab but you can definatly let people know you are there and I also noticed a bit of a power increase, more so at 1500-2500 rpm
Three inch single would be cheaper and easier.
The drivers side pipe with true duals would have to go to the passenger side and then back over to get around the front fuel tank.
Lots of extra pipe and lots of extra bends.
If you stick around while it is being done you will see that it does take time to do it right.
