You'd have to swap the intake manifold, fuel pump to a lower pressure one, and the computer for a non-FI one at the minimum. Why would you want to change to a carb, esp. if you have to pass emissions? It might be easier to do an engine swap/upgrade to stay within emissions specs and keep the cost lower.
Put it this way.. on a 350 v8 or somthing similar carbs are wonderful. But on a small 2.8 or 2.9 v6 or smaller, i think they suck, sence you get less power and less fuel mileage as well. In this case there isnt really an advantage of a carb at all. Look into switching your 1986 to a muiltport fuel injection system. I think the 86's had TBI (trottle body injection) which isnt that great at all.
oh sorry for the mis-understanding there. Im sure you could do it, but the heads may be differnt, idk. You should really consider swaping to muiltiport, that will show you hp gains
