Looking at an Excursion
We have just found out we are having a new addition to our family.
We already have 2 girls and decided we needed something more robust than a 2001 Ford Taurus. We came accross a 2000 Ford Excursion Limited with 92,000 miles to it. It looks in excellent shape and we could probably get it for 12.9k or less. Is this a good price and will it be reliable for @ least another 6 more years. Basically this will be my wife's new vehicle for light travel around town and possibly when we take long trips. I commute to work and @ the same time I take my oldest daughter to school and pick her up.

You're gonna cry when you compair the benifits of the taurus over the excursion as far as gas milage and ease of parking space...lol My V10 is getting about 12.5 mpg and last night I had a hell of a time trying to park at the TGI Fridays. Had to drop the wife off at the door and park out in another parking lot. It was either cram it between two people and have thier doors smack it or just walk a bit.
Other than that I love it. I use it for the business but when you drive it you feel like a king. My wife drives a 2000 Expedition and that USED to be the road trip vehicle.
I traded in my Honda CRV which was paid off and they gave me $10,500 for it on trade for the 01 Excursion that they went $17,500 on. Got it for $7000. It only had 56,000 miles on it. In the glove box was the original window sticker of $52,900. I met him on the lot but never told him what I got it for. I couldn't imagine loosing that much money. If I got it priced at $17,500 then you know he had to have only gotten about $15,000 for it.

But is 12.5k a good buy?
While we love the Taurus, it's not going to cut it with 3 kids in the back, 2 of them in carseats. We don't have room for much of anything now with just the 4 of us and a stroller. The Taurus will become my work commute vehicle. We know gas is going to be a pain, but considering that it will be driven only around 60 miles a week, it is manageable to us. We just want to make sure that a 2000 Ltd X with about 90k on it, still has enough life in it to make it worth $12.5. We're perfectly fine to keep looking for a better deal if this isn't a good one, but having never owned an X at all, we're not sure if this is a good deal or not. So what does everyone think? Is 12.5 good for a 2000 X with 90k miles on it or no? Do they have the life left in them to make it worth it?

I love my X and wouldn't trade it for the world BUT....
It sounds like you need a mini-van more than you need a huge truck that is great for towing heavy loads, carrying lots of people and all of their gear.
Of course I am one of those people that would want an X even if I didn't tow my trailer, didn't have a kid and was single! So I can't really judge. Get what you will be happy with, even if it is a huge, hard to park, gas guzzling tank!

12k seems like a good deal to me for a 4x4 V10.

GET THE VIN #!!! Then go to http://flatratetech.com/cgi-bin/ubbc.../forum/31.html to get an Oasis report.
The oasis report will tell you ANY service that ford has done to the vehicle. You have to crfeate a free account and it may take a couple of days but it is worth it.

We're fortunate enough to be related to the guy selling it at the Dealership. The X was actually a trade in that an extended family member made so we do know that it's never towed anything, all miles are hwy to and from work and it's not been in an accident. I'll talk to my cousin next week about the VIN, but as far as my wife goes, a Mini Van is OUT of the question. We do camp alot in the summer/fall so the size would be great for that. She's set on a Suburban, tahoe or another SUV like the X... it's just a matter of the best deal for the money that we can come across. She's a true southern girl and any truck/suv type vehicle is better to her than a van.

Gotta agree with KC...take a long look at the Expys....a lot easier to drive around town just because ot their tighter turning radius. They are also tons easier to find optioned out how you want.

I will admit that it just feels great driving the excurison. People give respect when you pull up in it. Just for the fact that people KNOW that it is an expensive ride. Also my license plate reads IPACA9 That translates as "Move Bitch!"

Expy might be worth looking at as mentioned above. I know that the dealer that I go to has had a TON of used 2005's 4x4 Eddie Bauer or limited for 28K or less. I am sure that you could get an older one for what you are looking to spend with less miles than the X you are checking out.

I think we've decided to let this one pass by. We still have awhile before the new baby comes so the wife has decided that if it's meant to be for her to have one of these big mega vehicles (she loves the big trucks), then another will come along between now and then hopefully for the same money but less mileage. Thanks for the info and advice, it has helped us make a decision that if that's what she truly wants, it's not completely crazy in that it is a good ride. She grew up in 4x4's and going mud bogging, towing campers and boats and is pretty firm in her resolve to have a big truck/suv rather than a van, so if that's what she wants. :-) Thanks for all the advice.
