Hey guys! I recently got a '70 F-100 shortbed from my Dad. It was going to waste sitting under a bunch of pine trees, so I convinced him to give it up before it was totally ruined. The thing is, this truck barely runs. It skips, sputters, and does just about about everything else, except knock. From doing a little research on this site, it seems to point to the heads as being a possibilty to all the ailments. I've done all the usual things like a complete tuneup and whatnot, but the thing still is barely driveable the way it is.
Now for the questions. I'm trying to make it driveable, and I'm not really a horsepower junkie, just looking to get it going. I've come across a set of C8AE-H heads with approximately 50k miles on them since being rebuilt. The guy says they were rebuilt in the early 90's, and he had hardened seats installed at the time. He also said they were for a 390 or 428, but my engine is the 360. These heads should still work for my application, correct? The guy has a good reputation, and seems trustworthy enough, to me, and I figure that even if they don't totally fix it, it can't hurt to try 'em. What do you guys think?
# 8 30 # is a big problem. You may have a blown head gasket or worse. Sounds like you're gonna have to at least tear down the top of the engine and see what's going on. I am currently having problems with an intake gasket not sealing and this will cause the engine to pull oil into the cylinders...that could explain the light oil you're seeing but that does not explain the low compression on #8. As for the C8 heads, yes they will work fine. You need to be sure that they have hardened seats as they won't last otherwise.
