How to check fuel level in Holley?

Trying to start it acts like its running out of fuel. How do I check my bowl level on a Holley 6140?

Do you mean 4160 series 4 barrel? or list number 6140? Not sure which Holley you have.

Thanks Putt, Its the series 4160. Just a Holley 600cfm 4 barrel with vacum secondary and the Ford automatic kick down lever. Its about 6 months old and I have misplaced the original directions that came with it. I thought it had a port to open and see the float level but I cant find it if its there. Thanks Charles

On the passenger side of the float bowls, there is a small slotted plug about in the upper 1/3 of the bowl. There is a small gasket on the plug, so don't lose it. The fuel should be even with the bottom of the hole while the engine is idleing and parked level.

Putt, I just looked and I dont have one. The only plug I have is on top by the filler neck. I dont see anyway to remove it. No slots or anything. I went ahead and pulled the filler neck off and the screen inside was clean. When I had this carb on my 352 it back fired once so I installed a new power valve. I guess I'll just pull the front off again and see what position the float is in. Thanks again Charles

Here is the write up on the "new and improved 4160" from the Summit catalog. Apparently Holley has eliminated the float sight and float adjustment. The photo in the catalog clearly shows no float adjustment screws on top of the float bowels.

"Here at last from Holley are the new and improved 4160 model 4-barrel carburetors. These carburetors are equipped with Holley's all-new Tru-Set needle and seats, which have eliminated the need for external adjustments. This change allows for easier "Bolt on and Go" performance. The floats have been factory-set for optimum fuel levels at 3 to 6 psi of fuel pressure, and should never need adjustment. If running over 6 psi of fuel, a fuel regulator is required. These carburetors also include a new, refined appearance on their float bowls, main bodies, and vacuum secondary caps. Along with having upgraded choke caps for smoother engine warmup and better cold drivability, these carbs are also the perfect upgrade for any ride."

This same setup was available years ago in the side hung bowls (the needle and seat on the left side of the bowls with no sight plugs) and discontinued so they could be easily adjusted. There is no such thing as bolt on and go for true best performance (well maybe 1 in 50,000).

My apologies, Charles, I did not realize they had "improved" upon the old method. It sounds like a load of dung to me!!

Just like the clear plastic sight windows on 670's to see if the float levels correct but the heads snap off and cause a leak. This is why i'm a pack rat with old Holley carbs, their good spare parts.
