Pyrometer and a Tach

I own a stock 84 6.9 that I have put a new IP and injectors in...But it never came with a tach and is a standard 4 speed... I'm just wondering how difficult it is to install ( I assume more difficult than a gas burner,(no ignition on the diesel) ) and what is involved... And also installing a Pyrometer and what is involved in that... Any good links or sites with the info would help ???

The pyro is easy...just drill and tap a hole in an exhaust manifold for the thermocouple.

One of the 6.9 guru's will have to clue you in on the tach signal....

Get a tachometer that runs off the alternator. That's how they get the signal for earlier diesels.

The tach sensor is located in the IP drive tower.
Look for a plug to the right of the oil fill spout. Some of the older 6.9 engines did not have a place to put the tach sensor.
Also the tach gauge is no longer carried by Ford. To get one you have to get the insturment cluster at a salvage yard and swap clusters. If yours does nt have a tach, then it also does not have the circuitry to run it in your cluster.

My truck never had a tach (go figure), and there is no sensor plug-in like you show Dave... I will have to look at an aftermarket product but don't know what would be the best type or who makes it..
Also with the pyrometer where is the best place to locate the sensor on the manifold... I imagine the instructions will say (when I buy one) where but just curious now....

Most have placed them as close to the manufold as possible but on the exhaust Y pipe using a clamp style pyro. If you did put it on the manifold you would most likely place it just before the Y pipe connection anyway. You may have a very slight difference in temps between the two locations....... remember aluminum pistons melt at 1250.
